For those that take 5 steps, where do you stand?
« on: August 01, 2011, 02:23:55 PM »
I have recently converted from a 4-step approach to a 5-step approach. I found, and was told, that my timing wasn't great with 4 steps since everything happens in the last 4 steps and that by adding another step, my timing would be better. I know that with 5 steps you're supposed to "push off" on the second step.

My question is, for all you 5-steppers, where do you stand on the approach? I've been trying to find a good place to start. First set of dots? Second set? Somewhere in the middle (if so, how far from either set of dots)? I know the whole "stand at the foul line and take 5 steps and that's where you start", but I've never found that to really work. So where do YOU stand? I'd say my steps are average in length.

I don't think your 4 steps should change much in distance, so just start where you usually do and take one full step back from there.

I use to stand behind the last row of dots furthest from the foul line. Now I stand right in front of them. I agree with the previous poster that in a five and a four the only difference is a very short slide step with your left foot and then a normal four step would follow.

Do you guys find a 5 step approach to be better than a 4 step? Do you think adding that one extra step can help with timing?

Uhhhhh, how many have you had?  All he's telling the guy is that his last four steps will probably be the same length they were as when he was using a four step approach, so move back one step from where he usually starts.

This is a good example of a 5 step approach

I start fom the last row of dots, basically as far back as possible. Even though I just take a very small shuffle step as a trigger for my pushaway and rather small steps on 2nd and 3rd step, I make a powerful "power step" and have a long slide. With a shorter approach, it feels cramped.

I changed to the 5 step when I first got started in bowling because of other higher average bowlers using it. I liked it because it gave me a little extra time in my approach and helped make it easier to generate more ball speed when needed.

When I teach I try to get my students to walk to the foul line as natural as possible as this is the easiest thing to duplicate.

And yes if you are currently taking four steps and are moving back to five, basically take a full step back. But either way try and make your steps as natural as possible.

The methodology between 4 & 5 steps is timing. Most bowlers I work with tend to be a full step out of time due to the fact that they take 4 steps yet do not move the ball until the second step. This is probably the biggest fault I see the average bowler have.

Some bowlers are able to move the ball & step at the same time. They can manage a 4 step approach and be close to in time.

Some bowlers need the extra step to create movement or motion, comfortably to get the ball moving on the second step. Some logic is 5 steps allows an extra step to screw up but the flip side is that 4 steps is too stringent.

Here's a great explanation by Norm Duke on how to determine where to start your approach. Where I start doesn't apply to you because we have different sized steps and different sized bodies and our natural tempos aren't the same.

For what it's worth, I converted from a 4 step approach to a 5 step approach last month. I was having trouble with the size of my first step and the length of my pushaway, so taking an extra step helped get my body in motion which made the pushaway motion more natural since I wasn't trying to go from a dead stop. It really helped me a lot, but then again, I don't throw it like you do, so that might not be the case for you!

Without having read the previous responses, just start at the foul line and try to duplicate your footwork and tempo working your way back. At the end of your slide you should be pretty close. If you're like me it will be easier to do it with a ball in your hand, too. Just throw the ball at whoever is close by. It will jump start their heart and do them good...
