For those who get sweaty hands...
« on: May 30, 2010, 02:27:13 PM »
Wouldn’t it be great if your hands didn’t sweat and you had a consistent grip all night long. Do any of you have any tricks that you use to keep your hands and thumb from getting sweaty?

Not to be a smartazz, but when i had this problem a year ago along with tearing up my thumb and bleeding, i tried everything. Vise tapes, size changes, tape changes, powders, and even pitches. Now i just throw two handed without my thumb and it works for me

Seriously though, might want to look into some talc like powder. I believe Lebron James uses it because he perspires so much.... Good luck man!

I don't know if you'd call it a sweaty thumb but I have a similar problem now where my thumb is getting sticky in certain spots and I start hanging.  The last few outings I've had to start applying easy slide to the hang spot which is on the inside of the thumb I think below the knuckle.  I feel like there's nothing else I can do about it, and since I squeeze I can get away with using the easy slide.  I'm trying to figure out how I could set my grip up to relax my hand but with my thumb doing what it's doing it probably won't work out.  I might have to cover my thumb with tape.

I wear a glove and throw the ball the with 2 fingers so all i have to do is keep my 2 fingertips clean, but ya could try the glove cause you really only have the fingertip to the first knuckle exposed. and as for the thumb i really cant elaborate on that since i never use it, but i do see others putting the dust from the sure-slide bags on the thumb so that must work or they wouldn't be doing it.....

Baby powder or silver powder is very efficient when fingers get sweaty - fill the stuff into a used-up puff ball or something similar, and use it much like a rosin bag.

I like that Ebonite hand conditioner, it dries your hands real quick. So much so for me that they'll split and crack if I use too much in a night.

Joe I have some of that stuff, but it's Brunswick.  I believe it's the same though.  Isn't it very similar to rosin though?  I know when I use it, I can hang onto the ball much easier.  That might just be because of the combination of it and white tape.  Is it fine to use the conditioner on any part of the thumb?  My problem area is the side of my thumb, and I'm thinking that part of my thumb is in contact that the tape too.

A buddy of mine tried the Kegel spray once andI don't think he liked it.  Sorry I can't share much information besides that and I think he said it didn't help.  His hands get pretty sweaty though.

I discovered a little trick a few years ago when bowling in the dead of sommer in a center with a low, flat roof and no air conditioning.  I took a paper towel (This one was in the dispenser at the wash basin in the men's room and it was a little thicker than the paper towels we all have at home.)  Anyway, I held it under running water just enough to moisten it, wringing it out to have just a little bit of moisture left.  Just before getting up to bowl, I would pick it up and wet the palm and fingers of my bowling hand just a bit.  When then holding my hand over the cold air from air blower it created a type of, let's say, shock freeze that immediately dried my hand and gave me a good grip of the ball.  Just make sure to keep the paper towel moist.  Still works great for me on hot days.

The same buddy I mentioned earlier does that.  I'm wondering if you pat the sides of your thumb with the towel or just the palm of your hand/fingers.

No, I don't specifically pat the sides of my thumb, just the underside.  I use the moist paper towel in the same way I use a rosin bag or puff ball.  Just sort of grab onto it and make sure it reaches as much of the thumb, palm and fingers as you can.  It is important, however, not to wait to long before holding the hand over the air.  The longer you wait, the less drying effect you'll get.  And a positive side effect is the fact that you don't have to worry about any powder build-up or sticky substances on your hand.

You may need to elaborate on the effect of the over-sweating and what have you tried so far.  Is it making you drop the ball?  Are you hanging up in the ball?  Do you feel uncomfortable and hold onto the ball?

A little more information and many of the coaches on here can help you out a little more.

Good luck!
