For those who keep your equipment in the car...
« on: December 08, 2010, 02:26:55 AM »
I keep my stuff in my car all the time. Yes, I know it is bad for the fact that they may crack, but thats my fault and if it happens, it happens, ill get a new ball.

I live in a dorm room that i usually have to walk across a football field to get to and im not rolling or carrying all my equipment that far and up the 3 flights of stairs.

anyways, the other day we were talking about how to keep them warm in the car, i was thinking that there needs to be an insulated bag made, or some version of a heat blanket that you could lay over your equipment that would keep them warm over night.

any thoughts? or is anyone doing anything that keeps their equipment from freezing at night in the car?

A couple of hours a blanket might work, I don't have any suggestions about overnight. Perhaps just leave a couple of junkers for practice in the car, and leave the competition stuff inside.

Keep one of the cheap styrofoam coolers in your trunk. Take the balls out of the bag and put in the cooler at night, that will do the trick. A cooler large enough to hold a couple of balls is cheap. I line the styrofoam with a terry cloth towel to prevent the resin in the ball from reacting with the styrofoam.

I have done this a couple of times when I had to leave my bag in the trunk in the summer. Worked great with the heat, so it should work just as well for cold.

I just leave my stuff outside. I'm in MN, its 3 degrees tonight and all my equipment is in the garage. It has never cracked for me in 15 years. I'm not expecting it to happen anytime soon. Balls don't crack from being cold its rapid temp changes. Usually warm to cold. So as long as the balls are left in the bag you will probably never crack a ball.

all u need is a heated blanket that hooks to your cigarette lighter.  luckily, older car cigarette lighters stay powered even with ur car off, while newer ones really dont too often.

seems like the easy way to do that??  just an idea.

I would not recommend it - you HAVE to make sure that the heat is evenly distributed across the ball's surface, otherwise you risk tension and cracking. I think it is even more safe to do nothing at all, as long as the temperature falls consistently and the ball is later warmed up to room temperature SLOWLY. These changes will surely not beneficial, but I'd stay away from anything that bears the risk of punctual heating. The styrofoam box is IMHO a good option, but in the long run it won't prevent cooling down at all, so it might be futile.

Ryan, I have been trying to come up with something similar.  Except I have been trying to come up with a type of "hot box" to keep my equipment in my detached garage so I don't have to deal with all the stairs into my house.  Even though I have never had a ball crack yet by leaving it in the car, I still don't want to take the chance.

Any blanket or cooler might keep them warmer for a couple of hours depending on how cold it was outside but I would not see where there would be any advantages to it overnight.

Problem is, the ball''s dont emit heat, which make the blanket work in the first place...When you get under blankets, they work by retaining the body heat you emit.

I have never had a ball crack from being left in the car or garage.  I have had balls crack sitting on a shelf in the closet. If your concerned bring them in.  If that is to much of a hassle, like it is for me, I don't think the risk is all that great.
