Rules application

The Serena Williams debacle has gotten me thinking.

Most of the supports say the foot fault should not have been called in that situation (regardless of whether it was a valid call or not).

Their explanation is that you don’t see fouls in the last minute of basketball games, umpires allow the fathom double play at second, referee’s in football don’t call holding, etc, etc, and you don’t see foot faults called in grand slam events.

I personally have no problem with the foot fault being called in that situation. In bowling it would have been not calling a foul on Wes Mallot.

Rules are rules and should be applied consistently thru out the game. And who decides what rules to suspend.

I have always had a problem in the NCAA tournament that officials suddenly quit calling fouls, traveling, palming the ball, etc. I’ve seen the end of games decided on which team could be the biggest bully on the backboards.

People say let them play, I say call the rules consistently.
