Foul Line Question
« on: January 28, 2011, 07:03:40 AM »
I don't have a rule book handy so maybe someone on here has the answer.  In league a few nights ago a player on the opposing team on his first ball of the frame set off the foul light of the lane to his left when  he finished his slide by extending his non-slide leg to the left.  His foot went over the foul line after his slide stopped because of how drastically he sweeps his leg to the left.  He argued that it was not a foul since it was not the lane he was bowling on.  Isn't there a rule that says the foul line is an imaginary line extended?

It is a foul.  The foul line extends all the way down the lanes, to the walls of the building and up the wall of the building.   If any part of your foot cross that line anywhere and makes contact past the foul line, it is indeed a foul.  If your foot or hand crosses the line and touches the lane or gutter cap past the line its a foul, and if your hand/foot touches the side wall of the center past the extended foul line it is a foul

Durbin is right, it's not the specific lane you are bowling on, it's breaking the vertical plane of the foul line. The only way it's not a foul when you do that is if you didn't actually deliver the ball. If you don't let go of the ball, then no foul.
