Foul Line sensor are off

The house I bowl at don't make use of the foul line sensors. Most don't work so they just turned the entire system off. I went to another AMF house and it's the same thing. Maybe they turned it off during open play, but this is the third AMF house I went to that don't have these sensors on.

For leagues: I'll look in the rule book, but I wonder if there's any rules for it. Last year, A guy crossed the foul line twice but no one said anything. He looked at us and left his foot there. But, it's not golf and there's no honor system and nobody said anything. So he got a mark.

I also bowl in an AMF house where the foul lights are off. AMF probably keeps the lights off to save $$$.  :-X

I'd suggest that most people don't foul very much anymore unless it's a major mistake. Way back (1960s), I knew a guy who went over the foul line by about 12- 15" every time. Even then we didn't call him on it.

Yes, I know it's a rule and I abide by it. Even my captain who fouls once every 2 weeks or so for who-knows-what-reason, accepts it and takes the reset. But if the foul lights aren't working, I think you need to decide before hand, maybe by agreement between captains, that you will call it between teams and that everyone will accept the ruling. Otherwise, ...

Hey, if the guy fouled and looks back at the settee area to see if anyone's watching and then doesn't call it on himself, then he's just a low life pond scum with whom you shouldn't be bowling. He needs a confrontation; if his captain doesn't do the right thing, then the league secretary and/or president should be called.

I bowl in 2 different houses and neither has the foul lights on. Shouldn't all sanctioned leagues have them on ?

After posting this yesterday, I remembered two other bowlers with different experiences. The first guy was new to bowling (2nd year) and to this Friday night league I used to be in. One night he stepped over the foul line and His teammate saw it and recorded a foul.

Few years ago a fairly good bowler stepped over the foul line and both times he recorded the foul. Not everyone in the settee even noticed. He just walked over to the scores table and fixed his score.

Maybe with all the warning labels that were installed a few years ago we don't need the sensors.  8)

5c. Foul Detection
A USBC approved automatic foul detecting device must be used, if available. When not available or
temporarily inoperative, the following procedures shall be used to call fouls:
1. In tournament play, management shall assign a foul judge or have the official scorers call fouls.
2. In league play, the opposing team captains shall call fouls or a foul judge shall be appointed.
Failure to provide for the calling of fouls as specified shall disqualify scores bowled for USBC High
Score Award consideration.
Commonly Asked Question – Rule 5c.
5c/1 What happens if our foul lights are not available?
 If not available, members of the league should be advised the captains are responsible for the
calling of fouls or someone can be designated to act as a foul judge.
5d. Apparent
A foul shall be declared and recorded if the automatic foul detecting device or foul judge fails to call a
foul that is apparent to:
1. Both captains, or one or more members of each of the opposing teams, or
2. The official scorer, or
3. A tournament official.
If there is a dispute, refer to Rule 10, Provisional Ball.

With no obvious benefit from a foul don't worry about.   The only thing I would be upset about is tracking lane oil back onto the approach.  If his shoe is tracking lane oil onto the approach, call him on that, make him remove his shoe.  Rules against defacing the approach.  A whole lot more serious infraction than the foul itself.  Same infraction as Baby powder, water, french fries, catsup, beer, etc.
