Foul or not a foul

In my higher dollar handicap league the other night we ran into a situation.

This is in a newer house where there has been little trouble with the foul lights over several years.

The other team has a very good bowler who slides/plants very close to the foul line. Generally within 1/2 inch.

On their first shot in the 3rd frame of the 3rd game the foul light went off on their lane. We were on the end pair and nobody on our team or the other team was in position to see if a foul occurred.

They stood at the foul line wanting someone to come up and see that their foot was about 1/2 inch behind the line and insisted that no foul had occurred.

Our position was that there had been no other fouls that night, the lights appear to be in order, and that everyone's natural inclination is when the light goes off is to pull their foot back some.

After some discussion the foul was recorded and bowling continued.

The bowler who had the foul was very upset and loud about it.

Now I'm sure in their mind that they didn't think they had fouled.

I know the rules pretty much state that a provisional frame should be bowled and put up for a review by the league.

From the sound of it the situation was handled according to the rules, the captains discussed it and agreed to mark it as a foul.

A provisional ball is only needed if the captains can't agree, but since they did its settled.

Rule 10 – Provisional Ball
A provisional ball or frame shall be bowled when a protest involving a foul, legal pinfall or a dead ball is made and cannot be resolved by the two team captains or a tournament offcial

I wouldn't worry about anymore.

Question in the era of automatic score keeping, how does one bowl a provisional frame?

Our general rule on a questionable foul is that if no one can verify the foul, we let it go.  I've seen bowlers that finish 6-8" back of the line set them off from time to time.

You would need to print off the game and then put in the provisional score on the print out and recalculate the final score.

Normally I would take that approach and I have seen foul lights set off from bowlers not within 2 foot of the line.

This bowler has had fouls before in the league and as I said they end up very close to line on every shot. I would have still let it slide but my team captain and other league officers got into the discussion and I stayed out of it. The bowler who registered the foul got very pissy about it.
