Need new ball for Ol' Lady
« on: February 08, 2009, 12:53:37 AM »
Hey everybody,

My GF needs a new ball and I am having a hard time picking one out for her. It really doesn't matter what Company the ball comes from but it has to contain the following.....

1.) aggressive coverstock
2.) prefer core with flipblock
3.) not real exspensive

she only bowls one night a week and bowls in occasional mixed Tournaments. It is hard to explain her style. She walks up to the foul line and throws the ball. Her best line is a direct line to the pocket. She throws the ball roughly 15-16 mph and basically tops the ball. She has a better follow through on her second ball. She is currently throwing a Brunswick Mammoth that she has had for 3+ years.
At this point time, unless she absolutely buries the pocket, she doesn't carry at all. She has better luck going brooklyn....
I think this is where the "flipblock" will come in handy for her....

Here is what I am looking at so far.....

Roto Grip Cell
Columbia Power Drive
Storm Virtual Gravity
Storm Dimension
Storm T-ROAD Solid (her choice so far)

If there are any other pieces I left out I would greatly appreciate your opinions. And as always, thank you in advance for any and all replies.

I would pick the Columbia Power drive but I would get the sanded version since she tops it.

The Cell will be aggresive but more of a strong arc. I would get the Cell pearl or Grand Illusion if you want flippy...

I suspect the Mammoth is D.O.A. I could never get that ball to hit, so by playing outside there's just way too much friction for a heavy load particle ball.

In addition to "justdale's" recommendation to the Power Swing, I would also consider very strongly the Copperhead by Big B. Extremely versatile coverstock that lasts forever with routine maintenance.

Its going to be hard to find a flip style reaction with an aggressive cover. depends on how much hand she has in the ball. Ebonite NVD , Roto Cell, Columbia Noize, Storm T-Road is a great ball, Storm Fear Factor if you can find one, Storm Virtural gravity, Dimension, Maxx Zone, Hammer Sauce, Morich Levrg , Ntense Levrg,All so try some of the pearls Hot sauce, Cell pearl , Gravity shift, The one Pearl,Rapid fire pearl, Storm Hyroad, 2nd dimension just to name a few of the pearls . Look into mid price balls theres alot out there

If you want something to be fairly aggressive, but still have an opportunity to flip, and at a decent price, I think a Storm Hy-Road might fit the bill.  A polished hybrid solid/pearl coverstock, medium RG core, it won't be as hard to control on the backend as a normal pearl, but it still gives you some backend reaction.  The good thing here is that pretty much anything new will be more responsive and carry better than her old Mammoth, which I guarantee is just absolutely oil soaked, tracked up, and the particles on it are worn away.

Also, some coaching to see if you can get her hand underneath the ball a little more might help also.  Most people simply don't understand what hand motion actually creates rotation and hook on a bowling ball, but once you put it into terms they understand, it's definately something that can be corrected.

900 Global Break pearl, it will FLIP off the dry. If she doesnt have a lot of revs try an Immortal pearl from Visionary, its a huge flaring ball with a snappy cover.

I agree with you Dan.....the Mammoth doesn't do anything at all. However, she doesn't clean it, it was resurfaced about 2 years ago and it sits in her car in all of the seasons. I honestly don't think she has ever had the inserts changed either.
Above it all, I really think the layout used is/was all wrong from the start. It is a pin over drill and I think it just goes way too long. However, when you "top" the ball then it won't do much good anyway. The other part is her reluctance to move her target and breakpoint.
She has had some "coaching" in the past.....they thought she would be better served going away from being a "back up" Bowler where she averaged 185 to going to a "normal" release where she has dropped to 160-165. Take in to consideration she is very stubborn and won't take any advice from me.....Her direct line to the pocket is is right in the middle through all of the oil. I have begged her to move way right and try to stay in the dry and give the ball a chance to move a little. I'm going to try and work with her this summer on doing that.....

I want to thank everyone for their opinions and I will settle on something for her soon. Right now the front runners are the T-ROAD Solid and as mentioned on here....(it didn't come to mind until later on) the Hammer ACID.

Thanks

The best luck I've had coaching people who don't like to be coached -- give detailed, but simplistic and easy-to-understand explanations for everything.  When they realize how much sense it makes, it's much easier for them to listen.  Explain why getting the ball into the friction sooner to let it roll up and into the pocket with more angle is a good thing, explain how lifting your fingers from underneath the ball creates roll instead of spin which translates into more hook and better carry since the ball doesn't bounce off the pins as much.  That sort of thing.  (And some people will just never listen no matter what you do, of course)

The C300 Noize is a great low priced ball with a great reaction and accepts surface changes well.
