Found an awesome cleaner for bowling balls
« on: June 10, 2006, 11:54:53 AM »
I've used a good portion of bowling ball cleaners. Most are medicore to bad at best with the exception of Track's Clean and Dull and Clean and Polish. I've also used household cleaners like 409, Fantasic and Simple Green. They seem to only work when there is oil on the very surface, or if you can get the ball warm enough to get the oil to the top.
I bought a product called Zep (Citrus Degreaser and Cleaner) at Home Depot. It was actully intended for household cleaning. I tried it on one of my bowling balls and loads of oil and dirt wiped off the ball instantly without effort. I couldn't belive it. Less messy and cheaper then most of the so called good bowling products at a cheaper price. It's also great for household cleaning and steam cleaners! Three times better then Simple Green and I was a huge fan of thier product. Mabey it's not a secret at all but I thought I'd share that this Zep is incredible. I have a mini spray bottle of it for my bowling bag also. I don't know how easy it is to get or common cause I just now heard of it.

That stuff is really good. I used to work for Depot for 4 years, and the Zep products are really good.  Zep is a Janitorial Supplier out of Atlanta that Depot bought out.

If you in the market for pest control, Zep makes a product called " Zep Commercial Concentrate Insecticide" . Its a small 2or 3 oz bottle, for about 9 bucks. The chemical is Tri-Cyclomethrin. Really potent stuff for home use.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the information on Zep.  I am curious, though.  Have you
tried cleaning a ball with Clean and Dull and then cleaning it with
Zep to see if it removes any dirt left behind from Clean and Dull?

I actually got crazy one day...

Used the Zep insectiside to clean the bowling ball.

Put it in my diswasher dispenser and gave it a good wash.

Ever since then I've been noticin everyone is not feeling that well around the house but my ball is really clean...doesn't smell very good though!

Anyone know if it alters the ball in any way? Hardness, surface etc? Approved by USBC??

i'd say be careful as to what it may do to the bowling ball itself. as far as what the usbc says, let your conscience be your guide. many of their rules and regulations about acceptable cleaners are outdated and outmoded. i find it very difficult for someone else to tell me how to clean a $200 investment.

I have not tried this on my bowling balls, but I can say that we use Zep cleaning products (general degreasers, floor soap, hand soap, hand cleaner) at our auto repair shop, and they work very well.

He had bugs in his bowling ball? Horrors! What kind of bugs? Can they spread? Do they fly? Do they bite? What color are they? Such an infestation could be disasterous for bowling as an industry? Call out the National Guard...oh wait they're busy....darn.....

I sometimes use a special professional cleaner for plastic window frames from a national company "Melorud" on my balls every now and then. The stuff does a very good job, and it contains ingredients to preserve plastic's structure. I also made very good experience with Mr. Clean kitchen APC as an everyday cleaner for my balls to get rid of oil and machine grease.
