Anyone have any advice for doubles league?
« on: June 25, 2009, 12:30:15 AM »
Hi all,

I am currently in a summer doubles league and am doing fairly well.

First week came out and shot 300, 230, 168.
Second week came out and shot 268, 237, 159.
I've missed 2 weeks for work-related travel.

But I'm encountering the same thing as when I bowled in this league a couple of years ago.  I was never able to re-set when things starting going south.

How do you guys out there who have bowled in doubles leagues re-set yourselves when things start going awry.  Obviously, this is a fast-paced league and tempo is a double edged sword.  It's great when things are going well, but it turns from snowball to avalanche quite quickly when things are not so good.

Do you have any quick mental fix-its in a fast paced league?

Thanks guys,
chris

I had thought about that [slowing things down to a crawl], but I don't want to get called out on it by the other team, kinda like a "delay of game" penalty thing, because there are some douches in this league.

Or, would you just ignore them and potentially anger them and possibly disrupt your partner, who never seems to get into a funk?

Maybe someone has a series of thoughts or "self-distraction" techniques that can help them re-dial it in.

Thanks Michael, I will certainly make a conscious effort to be "not me" and slow down a little bit and think a little more.

I think the biggest thing is don't make yourself feel rushed or panicked. Wether it's just telling yourself that mentally or actually taking some extra time between shots. If you need to take a little extra time that's OK. I bet the people you're worried about saying something would do the same thing if they were struggling.

Judging from your scores it looks like you're getting lost in transition since your scores decline between each game. Is that a fair assumption? What are you doing mentally between shots? Are you frustrated and only focused on that, worrying that you're almost up again or are you trying to figure out why you're not getting the ball reaction you expect? If someone else is bowling well watch them and see if you can do what they are or figure out how to get your ball to the same break point on the lane.

In my doubles league I figure I have anywhere between 1-3 minutes between shots. If I'm really lost/mad/frustrated I'll take a walk in the center. Just keep walking as far away from your pair as you can and vent internally for 20-30 seconds and get it out, stop for 20-30 seconds, stop venting and ask yourself what you're going to do to fix the problem and come up with a plan, on the 20-30 second walk back to your pair talk yourself into fully committing to your solution to the problem, don't doubt yourself. For me the thoughts on the walk back are usually about staying agressive on the lane. For me that small change of scenery puts me in an entirely different frame of mind and gives me time to think.

Take your time and relax. As long as you guys are keeping within a frame or two of everyone else I would not worry about it. Take a few seconds and take a few deep breaths get set and get back to basics.

Summer leagues are for fun. I am in a scratch doubles sport league. Obviously the scores are lower. Unless you make a living bowling, have fun. Take the rest of your life seriously, not bowling.

For me ball changing using the same line works best, it takes a frame or two to adjust. Used a Power Swing last night in a 5 man league shot 215,277, came out game three the ball was checking early changed to an AZO Pure Tactics bellied the ball out two extra boards and ended up three more left with my feet.

Went the next 5 in a row ended with a nice 232, use the same line to intially re adjust. I was taught this by Billy Hall and Renteria, in two frames you will be lined up again and still crushing the pocket.
