A stronger ball?
« on: December 15, 2012, 06:52:32 PM »
What is meant when one ball is said to be a bit stronger than another ball? What determines this? Is it when one ball is able to get through the oil that has bee carried down to the backends and still have enough left in it to roll into the pins? If I was to say that I have a Rising Star and a Grand Illusion what makes one or the other stronger?

As far as I have seen used here on ballreviews, there are 2 meanings that are used indiscriminately, without description, so it's hard to know what people really mean:

1. They mean the ball has a stronger backend than the "other ball", and

2. They mean the ball hooks more AND handles more oil than the "other ball".

To my mind, when you say "stronger", it should always mean ball "A" handles more oil than ball "B". With resin balls, the amount a ball hooks has nothing to do with the amount of oil it can handle. (With urethane balls, it was true that the more it hooked, the more oil it handled.)

A stronger backend is not necessarily always a better ball. It can mean it leaves more washouts and more splits than a ball with less backend.

Mo's definition of "stronger" is that stronger balls transition more rapidly from skid to hook to roll.  --  JohnP

The way Mo describes it is the way ball companies determine it as well. The issue is most of them are too strong.....i am still not sure i have ever actually seen the heavy oil that a ball like a nano needs....

Agree with TDUB
I threw the 912t at demo days on a heavy oil house shot.
was ridiculous, thing hooked right away and overall - way to strong
Now it was OOB which is 1500 dull, I am a bit heavy handed and maybe a higher grit surface or polish may have worked.
I hardly ever see that much oil anywhere and I bowl around alot

Strong relates to front to back reaction.,,most consumers want it to be side to side...entirely different
