Frantic and the 10 Pin....Looking For Answers
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:10:06 AM »
Well I am at a new house this year and my Frantic and this house seem to not get along to well. I use one of the App's that keep your stats and when comparing the Frantic against my main ball (VG Nano Pearl) I leave way more 10 pins.

I am looking to understand way this is and how to correct it. The Frantic seems more snappy off the dry then my VGNP and I feel that my entre angle is too much. I am leaving 10 pins with different lines and it's killing me.

Would a surface change make sense on my Frantic, maybe a 4000 abralon pad? If so, why would this help carry. Would I need to move left with this surface changed?

What would I get out of the Frantic if polished up and what would be the suggestion if so?

Thanks

Take it down to 2000, if your speed is firm.

4000 or a rougher surface should help because it seems like the Frantic is going too long and coming in late and slightly light in the pocket. If you could look at it in slow motion, you'd see the ball hitting the 3 pin too flush (this is relative to a flush strike), the 3 hitting the 6 pin too far to the left side and the 6 pin wrapping around the 10 pin. Ina flush strike, the 3 pin would throw the 6 pin straight into the 10 pin.

The earlier roll would/should reduce the extreme entry angle. I would suggest you're either playing too deep in the oil, there's too much oil for the Frantic's surface working with your ball speed/rev rate ratio, or you're hitting the dry too late. So surface would help control the breakpoint: earlier hook, smoother backend, better able to handle carrydown (side benefit).

Where does your 6 pin end up? There is more than one reason to leave a 10 pin.

Mainly in the pit...rarely in the gutter

If the 6 pin is in the pit, that is usually caused by the ball not bleeding off enough energy before it gets to the pocket. Find the friction a bit earlier, reduce your ball speed or adding more surface texture to the ball. Any one (or a combination) of these will reduce the amount of energy the ball has when it arrives at the pocket. That should help with those ringing 10's.

The dude who said take it down 2000 is more correct.. The higher the sand put on that ball the more its going 2 move on the back... I agree it doesn't make sense but on that ball that with stop it from being so angular... That ball isn't a heavy oil ball so it shouldn't be drilled strong and should be pulled out when the lane is medium dry and hand isn't needed... I traded my Frantic

If you can watch the motion of the ball (if you can video tape the ball) as it enters the pocket you will see it deflect more towards the 9 pin then back towards the 8 pin. I will 2nd or 3rd the suggestion that you take the ball down to 2000. Normally all you need to do is change the angle into the pocket just a tad. You just need to try small changes to see if you can stop leaving so many 10's.

My black widow pearl pearl will leave 10 pins if i have too much side roll and not enough forward roll.  My C-system 2.5 will start leaving them when there is too my carry down.  You can wiggle left, right, forward, backwards something to change your angle.  Sometimes to get that corner out, you need to move right for a righty, and throw it a bit faster.

No matter what, you should go in another time, or stay after league and experiment with all of the adjustments you can make, and try to pick up tells the rack is showing you on what it wants.

Let's look at this another way. You mention that your Frantic and the new house doesn't get along well. Your app tells you that it leaves more 10 pins than your Nano Pearl.

Considering that you have two balls, why not just use the Nano at that house? At least until such time that you find there isn't enough oil for the Nano, then switch to the Frantic.

Bowling and golf have some similiar aspects. Think of golf irons, they have different amounts of pitch, which allow for different shot shapes and lengths. If you played a par three hole everyday, and continued to come up short of the green with your 9 iron, but the 7 iron got you on the green, would you change the pitch of the 9 iron for that one hole? No, you would use the 7 iron.

It's the same with modern bowling balls. If you change every ball you have to work the same at the same house, then what is the point of having more than one ball?

In other words, since you already have the Nano, I would not sand the Frantic, your Nano already fills that spot in your bag. Believe me, you will have days where you need a ball that reads the lane a bit later and the Frantic will be good to have on those days.

If you really just want to use the Frantic, then sand away. OR, learn to change your release, ball speed, angle of attack, or adjust the line you are playing. In other words, improve your ability to bowl instead of just relying on ball/surface changes.

Changes to the cover of a ball can make a real difference, but it's not always the answer.

Very good point and yes, the VGNP is my main ball at this house. Highest average with it, highest strike percentage, and least 10 pins...all positive signs that this is my ball for this house and it will be used majority of the time. At our old house, both balls performed well, with the VGNP still being King.

I like throw two balls with the lengthy practice period we have before leagues start just to see how other balls react. The week before the Frantic got taken out for my final shot of the night and struck. S I gave it alittle more PT in warm ups and I liked the move it had, but the VGNP was in my hand come the first game.

Above average 1st game, but in PT, the frantic felt better off my hand so out it came and X, first frame, them the 9 pins started to show up again and a below average game. Back to the VGNP and 9 strikes in game 3.

I did try two different lines with the Frantic in game 2, inside and outside with 10 pins still with these lines.

I think that the Frantic for me is jumpy based on my release, the drilling and the pattern. I have to get this ball into an earlier roll which is what I am working hard to do with any ball.

I was looking at a surface change, but in reality I have little need to do so if the VGNP is working. Just looking for something that will really get me going in this house as the VGNP is solid, but I am not lighting up with it....224 is my high game with it and a 242 with my Cell as my high at this house so far.

It's not like I have to use the Frantic, it's just when I do, I am seeing a higher rate of 10 pins then my VGNP and higher then at the other house. I like throwing this ball but do not like this 10 pins. Love that a person can ask these questions and try to learn from them as I do not have a good eye on the team to ask.

I am going to study more of the top averages at this house, compare style and check the types of balls they are using and surfaces and see if I can learn more. With 18 teams, it takes time to see all these tops guys.

Watching better bowlers can be very helpful. If you notice a high level bowler leaving 10 pins, watch to see how he/she corrects for that. If they don't change balls, ask them what they did to make the 10 start falling. I have found that most bowlers love to talk about the little adjustments they make(especially when it works LOL)

10 pin is almost always about deflection.  Biggest cause of deflection on house shots is ball reacting extrememly strong off the dry, but burning up before it gets to the pocket.  Different surfaces can allow a person to either square up more which helps, or get even deeper which can also allow more energy retention if it isnt all used up turning the corner from an even wider angle.

Interested to know which way to o surface wise to Square Up?
