We used to have a great singles league called King of the Hill. First week everyone was lined up according to the latest ending average. Bowler 1-4 started on lane 1, 5-8 started on lane 2, etc.
You earned a point for every person you beat on your starting lane. 1 point for each person, 1 point for series. top game then got 3 points (beat 3), 2d highest got 2 points, 3rd high got 1 point. Lowest of course got nothing.
The next week, and each week thereafter, you went by position round. 1-4 place started on lane 3, 5-8 on lane 4, etc.
While you did rotate lanes each frame, the scores of the people on the opposing lane didn't matter to you.
Get blanked and it was easy to drop 10 places in a week, especially when this format causes the top bowlers to migrate toward the top.
It evens itself out though, with the top bowlers on 1 lane, the 5-8 bowlers, even though they may have a lower average, can make more points and jump up to the starting lane. All they have to do then is hang on.
We just moved places 1-4 one pair to the right each week.
