Help with matchplay league
« on: May 06, 2010, 07:30:11 AM »
Alight so I need a little bit of help, if possible.

So, my local house is starting a singles matchplay league next week. We are going to be bowling four games. Two against one opponent, and two against another. We cannot use the computer to keep up with the league, because we will be moving lanes and etc. Therefore, I have offered to keep up with it myself using excel. If the right lane moves one lane to the right after the first match, and the left lane move one lane to the left, they will always bowl on a different pair of lanes against a different opponent. However, I cannot figure out a way to assign the lanes at the beginning of the night besides drawing for lanes every week. Can someone help me out?

Thanks

Best thing to do is assign each person a team number (given), and take the number of weeks you bowl and multiply it by 2. There are many generated schedules for "X" number of teams and "Y" number of weeks.  You would be bowling two weeks worth of bowling in one week.

8 teams - 12 weeks = 8 teams - 24 weeks
week one "actual" bowls weeks one and two
week two "actual" bowls weeks three and four.......

This will provide you a normal distribution and makes sure no one appears to have bowled an unfair schedule.

Another option I have tried and worked out okay is the first two games are your normally scheduled bowling and the second two games are position round.  In a short league and a lot of bowlers, which you should have with singles, you are always competing with those around you in the standings.  You would only need the normal bowling schedule for the first two games and reset for position round for the second two games.

One downsides is the timing of when you finish your first two games and when you start your position round games (can be a while).

How many bowlers do you have.  I can get some of the schedules from other places online, but I hate navigating the new Bowl.com.

(EDIT)

Try this and see if it will work for you:

We used to have a great singles league called King of the Hill.  First week everyone was lined up according to the latest ending average.  Bowler 1-4 started on lane 1, 5-8 started on lane 2, etc.

You earned a point for every person you beat on your starting lane. 1 point for each person, 1 point for series. top game then got 3 points (beat 3), 2d highest got 2 points, 3rd high got 1 point.  Lowest of course got nothing.

The next week, and each week thereafter, you went by position round.  1-4 place started on lane 3, 5-8 on lane 4, etc.

While you did rotate lanes each frame, the scores of the people on the opposing lane didn't matter to you.

Get blanked and it was easy to drop 10 places in a week, especially when this format causes the top bowlers to migrate toward the top.

It evens itself out though, with the top bowlers on 1 lane, the 5-8 bowlers, even though they may have a lower average, can make more points and jump up to the starting lane.  All they have to do then is hang on.

We just moved places 1-4 one pair to the right each week.

We do a similar thing in our doubles match play league.  If you have league secretary software, there should be an option to "bowl two sessions each week" in the league configuration or advanced configuration.

If you don't have secretary software, get it.  It is well worth it.  It will tell you who's bowling whom, on what lanes, keep up with averages, standings, and, most importantly, money.  You are trying to solve a problem with an ill-suited tool, one that has been solved quite handily by others.

I use Perfect Secretary from Treasure Software.  The other major package is called BLS, Bowling League Secretary.  They are for-pay but again, well worth the investment.

Our local governing body for league play and bowling in general has developed a software package for league stats, and it also features a function which assigns the teams during a league start to the lanes, and calculates a sequence of games/team matches so that no team plays on the same pair of lanes consecutively, and that the distribution among the lanes is as even as possible. It is just not officially for sale...
