From BBE: Throwing off after front 11?
« on: June 18, 2004, 04:29:31 AM »
Saw this on BBE, so I thought I'd post it here:

Suppose that you're bowling in league, and you've got the front 11, but you've already shot 300 during the current season. You get eight or nine on the fill and you get a 298 or 299 ring, but if you strike, you get nothing. Let's also assume that the extra pin or two doesn't make a difference in terms of the results of the team game or series, and that you don't need the strike for 800 or anything like that.

What do you do? Go for the strike, or try to leave something?

Not to worry. I'd go for the strike. Odds are good I wouldn't get it.
I've seen almost as many 296s shot this year as 300s. The 299 and 298s are fairly rare, though.
My favorite was Rick Steelsmith at Tacoma in January. He left the 3-2-6-7-9-10 for a 294.

I have a friend that does this every year he has all rings from the last 6 years, an 800 ring, 300,299,298 and 11 in a row plaques. He is awesome and thinks there is nothing wrong with this practice. He made a 5 board move right one night to leave the 10 and called it before the shot, i did believe him or understand he idea of what he was up to until he explained that he collects a set of rings and plaques every year. So my abc dues get to help pay for his awards kind of bs but hey i dont get them so it is ok with me he does.

You say if he strikes he gets nothing. Not true, if he
strikes he gets a perfect game, also he could move up
and get a multiple 300 ring.

The guy i am talking about low average out of 4 leagues is 226 high 233, this guy can bowl on dirt and on floods, his rev rate is about 26 area and he uses the strike ball for all spares so you know he can flatten his hand for 10's. He already had 3 300's before doing these moves true a form of sandbagging but also i understand his point to get these awards also, he is also ex tour from the 80's and has 16 pba 300's also so we are talking about a guy with game and thinks it is ok to do these things. I know why he does it but never myself would practice these methods myself!!

mrbowlingnut,

That guy sounds like an idiot.. If he thinks bowling is so easy, why doens't he just quit. Alot of people would do just about anything to have the feeling of bowling a perfect game. I have had 3 in league play myself and there is no better feeling..

IMO, People like that guy give bowling a bad name..

If they only made a ball that would carry that d*mn 10 pin..

jkiser i agree with you he is not well liked in bowling unless you know him personally, i have been at tournaments watching him and overhearing other bowlers say that he is this and that. I will never agree with these ideals of his and thinking it is ok to practice, but i must tell you this guy is an awesome bowler and i do consider him a great friend off the lanes. He bowled the abc masters in 2001 placed in the top 20 and had not bowled a pba tourney since the early 1990's so he still has a great game and honestly the game to him is easy. His amateur winnings are over a million dollars and closer to 1.5 million so it must be nice to be this talented and do stupid moves like this.
