Help with Reaction
« on: November 24, 2010, 01:51:59 PM »
Need some advice, Due to a neck injury I have lost some of the strength in my hand. Because of this I have lost a lot of my ball reaction that I use to get. I had to drop to a 14# ball and now I leave a lot of weak pocket taps. It doesn't seem to matter what angle I try I get the same results. Is there a ball that has a more aggressive backend or a drilling that would help me get a little better back reaction. I am currently throwing a Virtual Gravity with the pin over the fingers. It's also polish which I know is not helping me. I have tried a Robby's rev wrist support but cannot seem to get out of the ball properly when using it. I know this is a pretty wide open question but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd bet you also lost a lot of your ball speed. The Virtual Gravity being for heavier oils, its early grab is probably what's preventing or reducing your reaction and carry. Why not try a ball for lesser or even just medium oil, possibly one with a higher RG, maybe like a Hy-Road or a 2Fast?

Polish probably helps the VG a little but if you've just moved down to 14s, your true PAP might not have stabilized yet (You might be throwing the ball slightly differently than when you had your full strength and were using heavier balls) and the VG has a strong MB, which means its position is very important to the ball reaction. The Hy-Road and the 2 Fast are symmetric cored balls and while drilling can be important, it is less specific than with a strong ball, like the VG.

Re: the Robby's Rev
It's a good glove, but if you've just tried it, normally such a device requires your span to be adjust because of the way the glove fits on your hand. Usually it will be shorter than without the glove. This may have something to do with your having a hard time getting used to it.

In addition to what charlest has said, those weak pocket hits are likely due to the nature of any solid ball if it hits friction too early. They lose energy faster than a pearl reactive. If your speed is down a bit you need something to retain some energy longer.

I'd recommend a good pearl since most of us bowl on house shots where there is plenty of dry outside and decent backends. Here are a few that I like:

Brunswick Damage - great for down and in. Nice late angle.
Brunswick Wicked Siege - a very strong pearl that allows most of us to open up the lane.
Brunswick Anaconda - strong and smooth for a pearl.

Storm Anarchy - another strong pearl that can be more angular for many.
Storm Reign Supreme - hybrid, but still strong late due to the polish, etc.
Roto Grip Nomad pearl - great ball with nice late move. I have recommended this one a lot, too.

Hang on to your VG in case the lanes are goofy with carry-down or get sloppy because a good solid will blend out the lane both front-to-back as well as side-to-side. Sometimes they can keep you out of trouble because they're more predictable.

On a side note, don't worry about 14 lbs. If you roll them relatively well they hit and carry great. Good luck to you.

What type of drilling would work best to get the reaction you guys are talking about with these balls. I have never been a high rev player but have never had the trouble carrying that I'm having now. Speed has been an issue but not to slow I actually think I am trying to throw the ball to hard to compensate for the lack of carry which is not helping me any.

psychodad,

I'd stick with a stronger layout for your first 14 lb. pearl reactive. Especially if your tendency is to throw it harder.

Place the pin somewhere in the range of 4" from PAP and just below the fingers. Have your driller position the CG where you'll have the option to use an extra hole to fine tune reaction later, if needed.

The biggest difference will be the change in coverstock from a solid to a pearl, but the proper layout can definitely help. Remember to just roll the ball and LET it react to the friction. Trying to overpower the lanes will lead to inconsistent results and frustration. EVERY BALL needs to find adequate friction before it can travel in the direction of it's rotation, EVERY BALL.

Best of luck. Let me know if you have some success or other questions.
