Who is affected more by carry down?
« on: June 24, 2004, 08:46:50 PM »
I never use to think much about carry down as it didn’t seem to affect my game. But since I started bowling on synthetics regularly with their big back ends, I cover more boards than I use to.

If carry down effects all balls an equal percentage, say 10%, then someone who hooks the ball 20 boards might come up 2 boards light but someone who would only hook the ball 5 boards would only be ½ board light.

But is the affect linear or might it be exponential? If exponential the affect would even be greater to the bigger hook.

In many cases these two types will be taking different lines to the pocket but they end up sharing the same breakpoint.

Who does carry down affect more the big hook or little hook or is it the same to both bowlers?

Well, its not quite that simple.  Carrydown affects those with less hand more than those who can effectively roll the ball and who can make proper line and equipment adjustments.  I.e., carrydown tends to affect seniors and less experienced bowlers who hook the ball more than more experienced and stronger bowlers.

Phillip, I disagree regarding seniors.  If a senior tosses a good rolling ball, despite its speed, it has a good chance to carry because of the roll. As a senior and with slower speed, I have a better chance againt those who wing the ball down the lane.

Bones

Bones, seniors with adequate speed and who can get the ball into a good roll are, under your scenario -- and mine frankly -- less affected by carrydown than are others. The key is speed to rev ratio.  As you note, what is happening in the midlanes also makes a difference.  Often, the mids are breaking down just when carry-down is at its worst.  If a player cannot generate the speed to get the ball through the mids, the ball will seize up and carrydown will have more effect.  Unfortunately Bones, I find that as I get older, I cannot generate the same speed as I could years ago, so dealing with carrydown becomes more of a problem as I have to find equipment that gets through the heads and can also handle some carrydown in the second shift.

I love the hold area that carrydown gives me
