Carrydown question.
« on: July 31, 2003, 10:00:13 PM »
I do not have much experience with synthetic lanes but I bowled a tournament on 7/27 which was held in a house with synthetic lanes.  Toward the middle of the second game, my ball started not making it to the pocket even on shots that I felt were good off my hand.  And if I pulled it just a little, then it would take off left.  I was confused to say the least.

Then, in the fourth frame of the third game, I threw one of those shots where I was sure it would strike as soon as I threw it and I would up with a washout. When my ball came back I picked it up and, rather than wiping it off right away as usual, I just stood there thinking "What the f&^$". It was then that I noticed that my early flare rings were dry and my late ones were wet. Aha! I exclaimed - carrydown!

At the time I was standing 32 and throwing 17.  My problem was that there was OB outside of 10.  So I moved to 17 and threw 12 with more speed and a little less fingers and came up a little light.  Next frame I stood 15, looked at 12 and found the pocket for the first strike of a five-bagger.  The move I made was the only thing I could think of to try because of my limited experience with synthetics and carrydown.

So my question is this...How do you handle burned heads with carrydown and OB outside of 10?

When people refer to OB, is it always referring to heavy oil or no oil?  Just curious.  I was going to suggest, if outside 10 is light or no oil, to grab your spare ball and play straight up the 10 board.  If you pull it, it will ride the oil and usually hold for the pocket.  If you lay it out a few boards, it will recover and again funnel to the pocket.  Sometimes you can play around the carrydown doing this (depending on where the others on your lane are shooting).  Maybe an idea to try sometime.  I usually struggle when conditions break down, so I've made a habit of learning to play lines where the people I'm against aren't or can't play.  Sometimes it helps, sometimes it don't, but I gotta try!!

By OB I meant heavy oil buildup.  At the beginning of the second game I tried was standing 11 and throwing 6 with my strongest ball (although it needs a resurface so it's not as strong as it should be) but I could not get the ball to the pocket.  Plus, when I pulled it - see ya - and if I leaked it right by 2 boards - 6 pin here I come.  So I ruled that shot out pretty quickly.

SawBones

Thanks for the input.

My normal shot is to stay pretty much behind the ball (PAP is 5.25 over; 0 up).

If I am ever going to be in OK on business or visiting my family (my Dad was born in and grew up outside of OKC) there I may see if you are available.

I think I knew that.  Dry is the wall, wet is OB.  Guess I got a bad case of Fridayhead.  I've encountered an oily condition like you describe once in the last 3 years.  Makes you realize how much work you have left to do on repeating shots doesn't it?  Anyhow, good luck in the future!
