callous at base of thumb, is this normal?
« on: March 09, 2004, 07:29:00 AM »
Ever since i started bowling again 5 months ago I have a callous at the base of my thumb. It never blisters or breaks open.

Is this callous a normal thing?

or is the callous on the base of my thumb mean i am not doing something right?

thanks

a callous at the base of the index finger (upper palm) is
the only "good" callous ......

I have a slighty rough spot on the inside part of my thumb about nuckle high but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a callous.

You might have a bit too much reverse pitch for your thumb, causing you to grip the ball to avoid the feeling that you might drop the ball. Either change the pitch so you feel more comfortable holding the ball (may cause you to have some difficulty initially getting the thumb out early enough) or, better, learn to relax the thumb.

reverse pitch? I'll have to check that out.

I do feel as if I am going to drop the ball on my backswing so I do grip the ball tightly.

They say you thumb should be relaxed, but if its relaxed how are you suppose to hold onto the ball?

I'm going to be hiring a coach soon and have him evaluate everything about my bowling, especially the thumb thing.

I am not in any pain its just that its calloused on the thumb. I could bowl 7-10 games a night and be fine.

I have a callous at the base of my thumb, but I'm pretty sure I don't grip the ball that much through the downswing.  It doesn't cause any inconsistencies in my swing, so I never worry about it.  But, is it bad to have one on the inside of the thumb at the knuckle?  I have one there that seems to grow the more frequently I bowl.  It too never really seems to throw off my shot.

A few months ago, BTM had an article about calouses etc., even showing drawings of a hand with various locations marked with calouses/blisters. They indicated what possibly could be wrong with each situation. If I remember correctly, a callous at the inside base of the thumb is perfectly OK. In fact, I think it was the only one that was marked OK. I will have to look up the issue and review it again. I have had such a callous for years.

I my experience a callous at the base of the thumb is caused by your span being a shade to long. I had a callous at the base of my thumb all through my youth bowling days. And then i found a pro shop that knew what he was doing. and after changing my span and pitches a little my callous went away.

Chrispy -- Depending on the thumb physiology, insufficient bevel on the bottom of the thumb hole and incorrect thumb pitch can also contribute to callous formation.  --  JohnP

Dicnic is correct. This is the only thumb callus that is OK. This article was published in May, 2002. Here are the exact words written by Bill Hall:...."Diagram 6 shows a callus on the front of the thumb at the base of the thumb and another on the outside edge of the thumb. These are signs that you are holding the ball properly with the thumb."
