Fun times at the Local Bowling Alley
« on: February 01, 2006, 01:02:42 PM »
Last year I bowled at this bowling alley that laid down a very heavy oil shot.  It was tough for me because I've never seen anything like it, but I managed to average a 201 for the season, which I thought was pretty respectable.

I decided to go back to that house, and see how much I could improve on the same shot.  They completely changed the shot, hoping to make it "easier" for people to score.  I'm not exactly sure what they were thinking.  The laid out the craziest oil pattern I have ever seen.  Since they changed the shot, the honor scores have been way down, thus eliminating the idea of making the shot scorer friendly.  Now they changed it again, making it even worse than it was before.  Now I am not complaining about the shot.  The reason I went there in the first place was to play on a harder shot for me.

However, the pattern they have now, is unreal.  Any ball that is of the higher coverstock thrown with any amount of hand, is basically a dead ball at this house.  I don't put tons of hand in the ball, but nothing would hold on matter where I threw it or at what speed.  I had to kill the ball completely just to have a chance, and my carry percentage was way way down.

I then took a look down a few lanes where a guy was shooting considerably well to see what he was doing.  He was throwing the ball hard with some hand, and it was coming into the pocket nice and tight.  He was throwing the original Hammer urethane ball.  I couldn't believe it.

Anyways, the point of this is, what's the point of changing your shot to make it "easier" to score on, when all you do is make it 300 times harder than it was?

P.S. I will be bringing my Columbia 300 Urethane Baby Blue Beast next week.  Got my first 300 with it, and it still hooks, so it should be interesting to get it out on the lanes again.
