Title: Fun tournament ideas
Post by: Tripcee on March 31, 2013, 12:42:16 AM
So, the bowling alley owner and I were sitting down and just tossing some ideas for tournaments or side-games for people to take part in.

1.Three ball tournament. No spare balls allowed. Each bowler has to use a different ball each game.

2.One ball tournament. No spare balls allowed. Each bowler picks their ONE ball and throws a 3 game series.

3.Plastic tournament. Can only use plastic, no urethane or resin.

4.Mover Tournament. Bowl one frame on each of 10 lanes. Best 10 frame set wins.

5.Shooter Survivor Series. A number is called out, and each bowler has to hit that amount of pins. Anyone who doesn't is out.

Any other ideas? Comments on the above?

I like the one ball tournament idea.

An idea I had and posted before was for a 4 man team/singles/doubles tournament. You bowl 4 games and count your best 3 games. Now the kicker is this. Your 3 high games count as your singles, doubles and team event score. Your linage fee would be low since it is four games, and more money can go towards the prize fund because of it.

Saw one local center is running a best 3 out of 4 games tourmanet that is $25 to $30 a person roughly. The thing is you come in anytime lanes are available in the month of May to bowl. There is no set date or time you have to bowl.

Good ideas. Also they would be good to run the tournaments during the off months. A lot of people want to bowl in the summer but not in a league. These ideas are good to help spice up bowling. I had a thought about something set up like the NCAA tournament.

This may not necessarily be the best tourney to demonstrate shot making abilities or lane play mastery (as in a one ball tournament), but my buddy and I have often talked about running a "lowball" tournament.  In college, we would end most of our practice sessions with a game or two of lowball to improve our spare games (corner pins and such.)  It was always a good time and definitely challenging! Would be fun to run a 3 game tournament and award the prize check to the LOWEST SCORE (who would have thought?!?)

Just my $0.02

PS -- the center where I bowl has Qubica scoring units and "lowball" can be programmed in, so there's no need to change scores when you dump it in the channel or fail to hit a pin...super easy!!  :)

Bowling alley up here is having a Partner's Best tournament.  Kinda like a best ball golf scramble.

For summer tournaments one of the local centers runs a weekly handicap doubles tournament. Bowl three games and depending on the turn out the top 4 to 5 teams advance to a step ladder format.

House ball tournament.  Bowl any number of games crossing different pairs, preferably at least 3, also 20 game marathon would be sweet!  Works best if you have Brunswick 2000 Ball Returns, Brunswick Frameworx Ball Returns, or any of the newer Qubica/AMF Returns.  Not the oval shaped or triangle shaped racks.

2 balls of the weights 8,10,12,14,15, 16 on the rack, placed randomly, and which ever ball is at the back of the rack closest to you on the lane you are bowling on, you must use that ball to bowl your shot.  Practice session will randomize all the balls before the tournament games start also.

So when its your turn to bowl on say ex. lane 7 which ever weight ball is on the rack closest to you on lane 7's side of the ball rack, you must throw your first ball with that house ball.  If the said holes are do not fit your hands too bad, make due with what you got and throw the ball however you can deem safe and necessary to bowl.  If you strike great, but if you leave a spare to be converted, which ever ball falls next in line at the back of the rack, is the ball you must pick the spare up with.  Too bad if that ball is not the same as the ball you used on the first shot.

Its all random and still requires a great deal of skill to read the lane and figure out how you can best utilize the different balls to try and ultimately strike.  Remember guys with big hands might struggle to use the light weight 8 or 10 pound balls due to the small fingers, and guys with little hands might struggle to use the very large holed 15 or 16 lb balls as they can't hold on to it.

Definitely something people should try.  I get rave reviews about the idea.
