Don't you just hate this?
« on: September 27, 2008, 10:03:06 AM »
First off, Im 17 years old. I've only been bowling this season for two weeks but still I have a complaint. I usually carry around a 200+ average and i know its only been 2 weeks but right now im at 177. Not only does this annoy me but, I do throw almost perfect, high flush shots every frame and happen to leave 10 pin after 10 pin. I do make most of them, but knowing i could have had about 50 pins higher per game, really annoys me. But the most annoying thing is that I have to watch other kids who throw the crappiest shots, have no idea what they're doing, throw like 8mph shots and still manage to strike and defeat me. My team is in first place, but i personally would rather have a high average. Can anyone else relate to me?
Better Lucky than good.

I can relate.  I typically average high 220s into 230.  But, last year, I struggled to score and "only" averaged 215.  I took the advice of a friend of mine who said that I needed to try and match my speed to my rev rate (thought my ball speed was too slow).  I have made a conscience effort in picking up my ball speed and, so far after the first 6-7 weeks, I am at 239 at the same place I averaged 215 last year on Wednesday Night and 236 on a second shift Friday Night league.  My advice to you, is dont depend on league to wait for scores to go up.  If you can, get out and practice and try different things.  Alter ball speed, alter ball surface if need be.  If you are leaving 10 pins, you are doing alot of right and not much wrong.  It is just entry angle that leaves them standing on good pocket hits.  Keep pounding the pocket and sooner or later, they will start to fall.

I wish I could relate to throwing almost perfect high flush strikes every frame.

Your post is laughable. Your notion that you hit the pocket that much and throw it that good is naive at best. Stop whining and throw it better. Until then, you're just going to get beat.

To put it best stuff happens. It use to bother me really bad when that happened to me. Once I realized that as soon as I let go of the ball the elements of what went on were out of my controll. All I could do is line up the best I could and throw the best I can at the time. IF it was good enough and IF things went right then I could carry and strike. I know you are 17 but you need to realize that. Bowling is a game of skill and A LOT of luck.

Get some years under your belt...with age should hopefully come the wisdom to adjust and the maturity to deal with the bad breaks.

It happens.  Get over it.  You'll find it happens in adult leagues as well, especially if you bowl the rec leagues...only there, you will also find some that have somewhat limited ability but also know how to maximize those limited abilities.

So you come before your team...interesting.  High average is nice, but if the team is doing well, then the approach to take is that your game should hopefully come around eventually.  In the meantime, enjoy the fact that your team is able to carry you through your 'struggles.'

Nope.  Not until high average pays more than taking first place at the end of the season.

it is bowling.  But there might be at least one thing out of your control.  Many centers put in new pin for the fall.  Usually they do so the last month or so of summer league and let those bowlers break them in.  But if they didn't then the fall league is left to break them in.  New pins are tough to carry until they get broken in a few weeks.

First Rule of Bowling - you can't play defense. You have no control over the opposition's performance. The more you let it eat on you, the worst you will bowl. Murphy's Law of Bowling

already everything said:
almost always the same pin... almost always the same "misstake" - try to fix it
and keep in mind... victory is with the team.... no matter how good yu bowl... when your team loses you lose as well.
focus on you game and it will come back
there are times when youget the feeling you did your best and see others that just did sh1t and still do better... that is life!

We have a word: "Sometimes I lose... sometimes the others win."
Life is hard... life is brutal... find a way to beat that tenpin... either on the first shot... or on the second... but beat it.
Adjust speed and revs and then entry angle and you will see....
Try - fight - win!

and with 17.... you have a lot of practice to go in your life
wish you the best pal!

Its the little things that work... Small adjustments are the hardest to make, but give the most reward. If your team is picking you up, just throw the same ball and put some more practice into your spare shooting.

Two problems for you to think about:

First, if you're going high-flush shot after shot and leaving 10-pins, you need to adjust.  High flush is a perfectly fine place to put the ball and it's the way to go sometimes.  Sometimes it's not.  If you're leaving 10s, then going high-flush every shot isn't working.  I'd have some sympathy if you said you moved all over the lane, tried different angles, high or light in the pocket,...

Second, this is simply the way bowling is.  It's not a game of skill, it's a game of who knocks pins down.  Always has been, always will be.  Go throw darts, do Merkin Bowling, or maybe horseshoes.  There are a lot of ways, "good" and "bad", to knock pins down.  There is no one "right" way to do it.  You can respond that score, then, is not a good measure of skill and you'd be right.  There's a positive correlation between skill and score but they are most definitely not the same thing.
