Corner Pins AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!
« on: July 07, 2008, 09:06:12 AM »
Well, lately, I seem to be leaving a lot of corner pins. If it ain't a slightly lite hit leaving a 10, it is a hair too high and leaves a 7. I understand these leaves but my frustration lately is MISSING the single pin spares.

Actually, I make most of the 10 pins using a plastic spare ball and throwing it dead straight.

What I am doing is missing the 7 pin, throwing the same plastic ball straight. I miss just by a hair either dumping it in the gutter just in front of the pin or sliding by on the inside. I have been thinking about going back to a hook for the 7 pin.

Just venting at myself for missing easy spares! Bah!!!

Just a suggestion.....it doesn't necessarily work for all people. Stand up straighter and loft the ball straight at the 7-pin with an exaggerated follow thru until your confidence builds back up, for picking up the 7-pin.

Make sure you end up pointing right at it.........hope this helps!

LOL, trust me when I say this. We all feel the same way especially when the joe-blow bowler who bowls just once a week and carries a 168 avg and seems to always take out the corners.....arg!!!!!!!!

My buddy who I bowled with for a 1 1/2 years was the same as you. Right handed and almost always took out the 10 pin but frequently struggled with the 7 pin.

I'm right handed and for me I have found that if I hook the ball into the 7 pin I almost always get it although my 10 pin shooting seems to go in streaks but I have got a lot better at my 10 pin.

I use a mild hooking ball for the left corner pins and a polished XXL plastic for the right side. Good luck!

Target board 15-16 throw it cross lane, pickup 90 percent that way most of the time sometimes screw around just hook into it. Depends on my mood that day but hardly miss it cross lane shooting with plastic, the 10 pin has become easier since changing to forward thumb pitch.

It is alot easier to stay in the ball long enough to target better, for me it has worked wonders.

try to stay behind the ball longer, you might be getting too much side spin on the ball. You also might not be getting enough continuation through the deck with the ball you are using

hooking the ball at the 7 pin is not the way you want to go. most bowling centers have a lot more oil in the center of the lane than on the outsides. crossing this oil to shot the 7 pin can be an adventure at times. a more direct approach is in order. shoot your 4 pin and 7 pin down the left side of the lane. trial and error will tell you where to stand and target but aim between the 4th and 5th arrows or the 5th and 6th arrows to avoid the buildup of oil in the middle.

And thats exactly why I play a small hook to the 7 pin but thats how I tackle the 7 pin, everyones different.

Last season when I joined a PBAX league everyone was telling me to shoot ALL spares with only a plastic ball and 'wow' did my avg fall  in fact some were thinking that I was sandbagging, which I would never do.

So now I went back to what I feel very comfortable with and that is playing a small hook to the left corner...but, thats my way.

Everyone is different. While watching the pros in Sundays telecast I would say that at least half of them had hooked the ball on the spares but the Rt-handers would use a plastic on the 10 pin and the Lt-handers would use a plastic on the 7 pin.

Peace!!

Once I stopped throwing the ball at the 4 or 7 pin (applies to the 10 too) and just focused on rolling it over a target, I stopped missing them. I ignore the pins altogether.

exactly!

choose your target at the arrows for everything... and you will se a great benefit in your targeting/aiming

getting the 7 pin for me is also a thread! We have a new center that doesn't oil the outter 5 boards at all and my plastic hooks into the gutter (argl) so I normaly play my strikeball at the seven getting 5-7 boards right on the approach from my "strike" line and playing the same spot. of course this doesn't help much when you get to a center you don't know the pattern and then "straigher is greater" really is true.

Just pick your target and get that seven... don't think about it! GET IT!

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Unfortunately, I already do (or try to do) most of the things mentioned. I NEVER look at the pins as a target. I throw my plastic spare ball dead straight, coming up the back of the ball. It is an old Columbia Blue Dot, the hardest ball ever made (Until the advent of the new Storm Ice Storm).

I am guessing I stagger during my approach on the 7 pin, undermining the line I have selected. I usually target at the 25 arrow when shooting at the 7 pin.

I just need more practice, I guess.

I have found some issues with comfortability at shooting my 7's and 4's. I have come to terms by just practicing shooting them only and memorizing boards to stand on and aim at when shooting them as well as all of my spares.

It took a lot of practice and being persistent with it and I'm now a pretty decent spare shooter, i'm not great by any means but I continue to practice and get better the more I bowl.

Balance will change the angle of the ball, very important. Also, whatever method you use, as stated above, line up your feet on a particular board, pick a mark and aim for the mark. Adjust by changing the board you place your feet on or changing the mark you are aiming for. Make small changes and once you get lined up, write down the board and the mark so that you will remember it until you get used to it. May sound elementary, but it works.

I didn't look at the pins before changing either. What I meant was that a bowler may throw through a target at the pin(s), which really equates to throwing the ball at the pins making the target moot. I ignore the pins completely in my mind and just focus on the target board as if it was the pin, if that makes sense.

There really isn't any guesswork with single pin spares using plastic unless you're using your strike release (which you aren't). No matter what house I bowl or what oil pattern is out I stand in the same spot and throw at the same board for the 4 or 7 for example. I only start using multiple targets (target arrow, breakpoint) with my strike shots or sleeper/buckets.

If all of this is true in your case, then I'd say you should start looking at inconsistencies in your swing plane. Get some video if you can and get some shots from the back to see if you're looping it or something.
