I am having gallbladder removal surgery on Monday and I was just wondering if anybody has had it , and how soon were you able to bowl again. My league night is Thursday night so this coming week is out , but I am wondering about maybe the following week to make it, or would that be pushing it? If anyone has also been through this would just like some feedback.

Brad,
You should talk to your surgeon about this. I would imagine that every case could be different. Someone who had the same surgery 10 years ago might not have had the procedure done the exact way you will since surgery techniques advance quickly. The surgeon will know what his other patients went through on recovery and can answer your questions more capably than someone here.
Good luck and hope you get back to bowling quickly.

Thanx for the reply. I understand fully what you are saying, was just curious what anyone else's experience was. I have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon next Tuesday and I'll see what he says.

i would trust what the surgeon tells you for restrictions..it depends on how bad or good the surgery goes.
-
Just going off my buddy's experience, you'll probably be out for 3-6 weeks. Like the others said, each case is different, but the doc told my friend not to bowl for about 4-5 weeks. He was able to bowl a bit early, but that's him.
-
It depends. But, I know they do most gallbladders laproscopic (spell?) which reduces recovery time drastically. I had emergency appendectomy in which I was cut open about 4 inches and I missed 3 weeks. Hope everything goes well for you and godspeed.
-
I'm needing mine removed too so I'll be tracking your progress. Seems like these days they remove the gallbladder thru your belly button so recovery is a lot quicker.
-
Thanx all for the well wishes. Freak....it is a much easier simpler procedure than when they used to have to cut you open to do it. My surgeon allows up to 4 weeks off from work, but a minimum of 1 week...after the 1st week we'll see how I feel(I won't be in any rush).
One thing I found over the summer when I first learned this was the case for me and it had to be removed was this website
http://www.squidoo.com/post-gallbladder-surgery-diet
this is very informative about it and the posts by others who have gone through what we are going to go through. check it out
Then again after the way I bowled the first week of the season on Thursday, they'd be better off without me :P
seriously, last season the few weeks I was out they always did really well.

I was out three months, I did mine 11 years ago but I lived with it for two years before it was removed. They said it was badly infected when they removed it.
-
if they are able to do it laproscopically they poke 3 holes usually...1 for a camera one for a tweezers and one for the scissors. recovery from the hospital is usually 1-2 nights and back to work in 7-14. realistically you could prob be bowling in 3-4 weeks but the surgeon will recommend 4-6 weeks off
-
My boss who bowls had this done laproscopically last year. She was back to work in 2 weeks, but didn't bowl for 6 weeks. Depending on how your recovery is, I'd go with the majority thinking 4-6 weeks off from bowling so you can heal up.
-
Yup! 4-6 weeks is usually the standard depending on how healthy you are before the operation. Good luck with that!

I had mine removed on a Friday about 15 years ago, went back to work (desk job) the next Tuesday for a half day, then Wednesday on for full days. I don't remember how long I took off bowling, but I don't think it was more than three weeks. -- JohnP

Well, I had it removed Monday...was not in as much pain as I thought I would be afterward. Couldn't eat the remainder of that day--nausea and vomiting, but Tuesday I ate all 3 of my meals, ..solid food no less, was good. They ended up keeping in the hospital for a 2nd night last night because of how gangrous my gallbladder was when it was removed.
I have a follow up appiointment with the surgeon son Tuesday so we'll see what he says. I hope I don't have to sit out 4-6 weeks from bowling...yikes...but we'll see how I feel and what doc says. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Good luck to you, an here's hoping for that speedy recovery, indeed!

Brad,
Hope you are feeling better by now. Have a speedy recovery and a painfree return to bowling.

I'm an RN. 4-6 weeks is standard "rest" time. If you come back too soon you can create any # of complications. You'll have a follow up a couple of weeks after your surgery. Bring up bowling at that time. U may get approval from ur surgeon if everything goes perfectly.
-
Best advice I can give you is to take your time. I rushed back to playing softball a month after my appendix burst and I still have some issues as a result 15+ years later. An extra week here will be much better than having to deal with minor issues for years.

Well, I bowled in my league tonight. 1st time bowling since my surgery on Monday sept 16th. 8 days after my surgery at my follow up appointment I asked the surgeon about bowling. His Recommendation was wait 4 weeks after surgery, but when I asked him about it after he said that(I can be stubborn at times) he said I could try it --that I couldn't make it worse, but he sad that If I fell sore the next day, then that means it was too soon to return. I waited till tonight approx. 2 1/2 weeks after surgery.
My Speed was a little bit slow at the beginning about 1 1/2 mph slower than normal , but was at my typical speed by the end of the first game--rust and hesitation maybe. I didn't seem to feel "unfit" to bowl--I'll know better tomorrow how I feel when I wake up---I did better than I thought I would first time back--- 197, 190, 194 ..nothing earth shattering, but nice way to return, especially considering that for 29 of my 30 frames I was using my new Red reactive Hammer from 1994 which I had never thrown until tonight so I was pleased, we'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Well, no soreness or pain today when I got up , so that is a good sign. The lack of oil in my league, especially on my left side is unfortunate, but all that means is my new red reactive hammer will come in handy and the other league balls will go back on the spinner to tame them a bit more. I am good to go and am looking forward to my next bowling outing.

Welcome back! Glad everything came out good!

Brad, no pain is good news. On your dry lanes, don't try to combat them with more speed. You don't need to put unnecessary stress on your body at this time. Good luck with your bowling.
