VOTE on ACETONE...
« on: September 05, 2004, 10:33:35 AM »
Let's see how many bowlers on this site, think ACETONE and/or NON-ACETONE CLEANER should be allowed for bowling ball cleaning.

Vote AYE for.
Vote NAY against.

My vote is AYE

In what time frame are you talking about? During sanctioned competition? Illegal. Before or after as a cleaner? Legal.

If you say it's illegal, other than during sanctioned competition, I say PROVE IT.

Oh, I vote AYE.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

Prove it?

How about in the rules, it says it is illegal to use AT ANY TIME.
There are no IFs, ANDs or BUTs. There are no provisos; there is no leeway. It is not open to interpretation. It does not say, when inverted feels like using it, then it is fine. What do you need to fall on you before you realize that?

It says, POINT BLANK: "You are not allowed to use it at ANY TIME"!

As a ball cleaner yes, acetone should be legal.
During competition no, nothing but a towel should be legal.

In my senior league where most of the guys have bowled 40 plus years, I have heard it all. To some of these old boys, if you're not cheating you're not trying.

The acetone issue has been round for many years. The old timers will remember the stories of bowlers soaking their ball in acetone prior to a competition. Soaking a ball for an extended period of time will soften the surface and potentially flatten a very small spot on the bottom of the ball where it meets the bottom of the container. So be sure the ball is not sitting on your track Just kidding, please don't any of you young folks try it. Very toxic and absorbed through the skin. I would hope the acetone soaked ball days are gone.

Guys would also drill holes in the ball, add lead weight and plug over the top to create various ball reactions. In those days balls only had a small pancake weight block under the label to adjust for the material removed in the drilling.

My guess is the ABC in an attempt to head off such ingenuity banned acetone. Not because of bowlers using acetone as a ball cleaner, but because they found out that prolonged exposure i.e. soaking a ball will cause the surface to soften. If acetone hadn't been identified to the ABC as the cause of balls checking in at durometer readings of say 67 when they know the ball has a manufacturers hardness rating of 76 this acetone thing would not be an issue.

Acetone used as a ball cleaner evaporates way to fast to cause a ball any surface softening and is a hell of a lot cheaper and works a lot better than the $20.00 dollar a quart cleaners.

Just my thoughts,

Tom

Good post, Tom.

I vote AYE.  Of course, I have a history of backing the losing side

Not always, just most of the time.

Some ammo for Charlest:

Reply from ABC is below:

First of all, the use of acetone is illegal at ALL times. Which means
it is illegal to use before, during and after competition. Link
referring to this---
http://www.bowl.com/bowl/BowlDotCom/common/static.html?page=bowl_speccert_ballcleaner

The repercussions to using acetone could result in: "If it is shown the
bowler had prior knowledge their actions were in violation of Rule 18,
the game(s) in which the violation occurred is subject to forfeiture. In
addition, the bowler is subject to dismissal from the league and
suspension of membership. Competition is defined as the remainder of
the current game and remaining game(s) in the series being bowled."
Please refer to the 2004-05 Rule Book in the Unfair Tactics section on
page 14, Rule 18.

I also went through the discussion forum on ballreviews.com. I am not
sure how to best answer the discussion that is currently going on there
about acetone. With discussion forums, people can remain anonymous-or
establish incorrect identities and so on. One person on the discussion
forum may say that "he is using acetone" on his equipment....saying that
it works and is the best thing out there, but he may be doing that just
to deceive or misinform people. Noted on that same discussion is the
posting of the ABC/WIBC Playing rules referring the Acceptable
Products/Cleaners and someone posted Acetone is Not Acceptable at any
time. With this example, please use caution when looking for bowling
related information on a discussion forum.

We will also look into the newsletter from bowlingball. com to see if
the information they published is accurate. If you do come across a
copy of it, please send it to us at the address listed below.

We appreciate your concern and hopefully the above information provided
enough information to cover all of your questions. If you do have
further questions, please reply to me by any of the means listed below.

Thank you,

And in another email:

Proshops should not be using acetone to clean bowling balls. If they
are it would fall on the rule listed below about knowingly using the
product with relation to the bowling ball owner. There are just so many
other acceptable products out there for cleaning equipment than for
someone to use acetone. As for figuring out if a proshop is using
acetone to clean the bowling ball...it can soften a bowling ball, damage
finger grips and thumb slugs, but other than that it would be hard to
detect. Your comment about the durometer is correct in being hard to
detect without knowing the prior information.
