Using Clean N Dull and Scotch Brite Pad?
« on: May 07, 2004, 02:40:11 AM »
Hey guys I'm currently using a Columbia Full Throttle right now and my local pro shop guy recommended that I used clean n dull with a scotch brite pad (green) every two weeks to keep the finish dull. My question is, how should I do it? Should I clean in a circular motion with medium force? My only concern is having the ball be an uneven finish when I'm done. Could someone tell me a proper way to do this? Thanks.

It depends on how much oil you're bowling on and how much care you take of your balls between that 2 week point. The green nylon pad is considered to be about 600 grit, which is fairly rough for such a strong ball, but you may need it.

Basically, this procedure will help remove some of the oil that the ball absorbs during use and the green pad will help keep the ball at 600 grit.

My opinion is that unless you are never wiping your ball off each time or even between uses, this is slightly too often. I mean you should be wiping your ball each time you throw it to help prevent it from absorbing too much oil  and if you're bowlign in that much oil, you should give it a light cleaning preferably after each use, but at least before each use. If you do that, I think you can do the Clean 'n' Dull + green pad routine once a month or once every 6 weeks.

A ball won't lose its 600 grit finish very quickly. In fact, most lane surfaces are considered to get a ball to about 600 grit.

Yes, you should use a spinner to insure an even coating, but then you are not or shouldn't try to grind that green pad into the ball's surface. An even, medium-light pressure should suffice to both get the C 'n' Dull somewhat into the pores and also to keep the ball at 600 grit.

charlest: Yeah, I wipe my ball after each ball I bowl and I clean it with a cleaner afterwards (either with Storm Reacta Clean or just Clean n Dull with a towel). The thing is, I'm bowling in pretty heavy oil and the ball has become pretty shiny in just two weeks of us (bowling about 7-8 games a week). What should my routine be in this case? And yeah I'm probably going to have to Scotch Brite the ball by hand, so I guess I'll use the medium-light pressure you suggested. Oh, does the Scotch Brite pad rub off the paint on the ball? Like the paint on the letterings?

If the oil is that heavy, then my suggestion is to use the pad and cleaner, I wouldn't worry about it rubing off any "paint".
