GEICO Plastic Ball Championship
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:06:44 AM »
Are the pros gonna have to only use plastic balls or something?
pba.com says its a cheetah pattern.
i just thought that if all the competitors had to use plastic balls for the entire tournament, it would have an old school feel
Better Lucky than good.

Exactly.  They're going to be using the same PBA-issued plastic balls.  (The only exception is the TQR for non-exempt bowlers -- to save costs from the PBA having to get them all plastic balls, the TQR session will allow the normal equipment.  Once those bowlers make the Round of 64, however, they switch to the plastic ball format like everyone else)

This might be the best show to watch all year.

They'll probably bone the lanes up so the plastic balls hook a ton.  Thus negating the purpose of the event.  You wouldn't want these guys to look like regular old bowlers would ya.  But I'm sure the commentators won't let us forget how exceptional they are despite the 184 to 192 title shootout. lol

The TQR bowlers won't have to use plastic, but once you make the field of 64, you have to use the 50th Anniversary Maxims that are provided to you. And yes it is on Cheetah.

Byt the way, what was wrong with the Chris Paul tournament?

In reading Jeff Carters blog from the Reno tournament, they had modified the Cheetah yet again.  It'll be interesting to see what version they use and how it'll play.  I'm glad I live in Denver so I can check it out.

this should have been done on a longer oil pattern.... or maybe a reverse block.....
then the cream would have risen to the top.

I am sayin in the finals,
we have

WRW
Duke
a few young gun crankers (just for their ability to spray pins with the amount of revs they have)

fyi..
I think each competitor gets two plastic balls to use.  I imagine they will dull one up for their 1st ball shots.

Well, I just took the Chris Paul thing for what it was, a fun event designed to raise some money for Chris' foundation. They all looked to be having a good time (although Beasley looked scared to death) and showing off for the crowd. It wasn't designed as a showcase of flawless bowling execution.

That's exactly what it was.  Some people just like to complain about anything they can.  They have the same events in other professional sports as well.  They make for good TV and wider fan base.

From what we've been told so far...we will be bowling on a special version of Cheetah with the pattern design intact, but with lower volumes. This will somewhat replicate the conditions in the 70's when polyester was in its prime. We will be allowed to drill 2 50th Anniversary Plastic balls for use, which will remain in the bowling center at all times. We will be allowed to alter the surface in a standard manner. Also, all team spare balls will not be permitted in this event...only the 50th Anniversary balls.

The plastic balls were manufactured by Ebonite and have no distinctive markings or labels on them, other than the PBA 50th Anniversary logos...also, the balls are sort of a black/purple color.
