Getting back after 4 year drought
« on: May 24, 2011, 01:56:59 PM »
I've been bowling since I was 6 years old. I dominated the sport until about 18 when I burned myself out bowling 100 game weeks and joining the military. My love for the sport has never left. I've just been waiting for the right time to jump back in. My skill is still there, just wondering what might be different on the lanes these days. (Ball advancements, lane conditions/etc) I picked up a house ball the other day with house shoes and threw a 9 strike game. Love the sport and can't wait to get back on the lanes.

what exactly do you mean by "dominated the sport"? dominate is a relative term

I, too, got back into bowling after 5 years but I didn't "dominate," the sport, I left with a 175 average.  I didn't notice a huge difference in the sport when I got back into it other than ball technology, however throwing a house ball on open play conditions really won't give you a solid idea of whether or not lane conditions have changed.

If you can consistently have a 9 strike game with a house ball, I would stick with the house ball. It will save you lots of money and take the lane condition out of the equation, and you will still dominate the sport.

A fourbagger by any other name is still a fourbagger.  Get it right or flunk bowling 101.

Things haven't changed much in the last 4 years.  Coverstocks have gotten stronger, balls like the Brunswick Alpha-Max, the RotoGrip Theory and the MoRich DestroyR have what are called "super covers".  The dual angle technique for matching layouts to bowlers is more effective than any of the older methods.  Otherwise, on house shots, stand left, throw right and watch the pins fall.  --  JohnP

dominate=rolling perfect games, breaking/setting house records, winning leagues, averaging over 200 on sport conditions and 220 on house, etc.

Wouldn't the term "excelled" be a better description of how you bowled.
To "dominate" implies you had no peer in the game, which may be true if you bowled in a small circle of competitors, but your mere mention of averaging 220 doesn't back up your claim of you having a superior game to many other players.
Had you said you used to average 210-220 on sport shots and over 240 on house shots, then your claim would've been accurate.
