I haven't heard much chatter about the Derby tournament this year but I wanted to get some opinions about this year's shot before I head down there on Friday. I saw a comment or two back in April about it being a very tight shot and carry is a big issue this year. So has anyone experienced that same thing recently? Any feedback or tips would be very helpful.

Just made it back home from Louisville and I actually did very well; had to be my best weekend ever at the Derby after 4 years of doing it. Even one 3 high game pots in our group during the process (would have been 4 but one of my friends beat my score 247 to his 249). Pretty much used my 505T nearly the whole time, lanes were very oily and not much backend. Hopefully, I make low cash at least because I've never gotten money back from there. Not sure if they'll post the low cash positions on the site or not. Does anyone know?

No backend? You either werent far enough right or didnt get the ball right fast enough. Still, good bowling. Low to cash from the previous yr was posted on the big board, its usually accurate as far as forecasting for the following year.

Well, good and bad.

I can confirm that the lanes were in fact tighter than, i'd say, the past 5-6 years.

I shot 648-642-644 in all events for 1934, which is pretty bad. However, I really didn't feel that I threw the ball terrible, this is the first year where carry was a real issue to me. I had a very good look (playing about 10 at the arrows, to about 7 with mild speed and really up the back of the ball) but it was extrememly difficult to get any momentum going in my games. Everytime I was working on a double I posted a good shot that resulted in either a wrap 10 or a solid 8 pin. Couple that with 2 games in which an untimely 7-10 can really de-rail a game. For the most part I was grinding, hoping to catch fire and have some substance to add it to if I did, it just never came. My 6 games Sat were 220-203-219-213-213-222 if I remember correctly. Plastic got some work, which re-enforces my theory that the plastic is truly the most important ball in the bag.

The middle of the lane was really flakey and easy to get in between 3-6-10 leaves and 2-8 type leaves.

Well, I can't say that there was no backend because there was some on Saturday when I did teams, it just wasn't jumping off the spot much unless the bowler had a ton of revs like Belmonte. That day I played straight up 10 and by the 3rd Game switched to my GT1 and actually moved 2 boards to the right. But Sunday was a different beast, either the oil length was longer or the pattern was much flatter than the day before. Had to really back off on my approach and ball speed and that really proved to be a good thing. Kept it at 8 board going down and in for 4 games and the last 2 moved left and threw it straight up the 10 board with the 505T the entire time (which I was surprised by that but I was throwing so well I didn't want to change anything). So that weekend I shot 572 (teams), 691 (singles) and 665 (doubles) for a 1928. Might have missed low cash for singles actual (darn 10 pin) but I think I'm ok with singles and all-events handicap. Overall, I felt that I shot very consistently and the few opens I had was from missing my mark too far right. The carry was frustrating to alot bowlers because I would see them bury the ball in the pocket and leave either constant 9 or 10 pin standing or get the 8-10 split several times.

Sounds like me, hold for a 268 game, i couldnt string any strikes on a regular basis. I actually thought they were tighter last year.
