Picking up the ball again... I practiced on Wednesday....
« on: May 02, 2010, 04:20:19 AM »
...and walked like an OLD LADY for two days afterward.  YIKES.

I am back to bowling after a 7-month hiatus!   A friend of mine (thank you, Mark!) invited me to bowl a summer league that starts in ten days.  It's a 4-person roster mixed league, so it should be good fun.  Since I was invited and said yes, I thought I'd better get out of the house and see if I can still throw the ball like a human, so off to practice I went...

A bowling center near me offers 3 games for $4.95, which is a pretty good deal.  I put on my shoes (they still fit) and did a LOT of stretching because I was worried more about injury than muscle memory.  The first two balls out of the bag were the Smokin' Inferno and White Dot and then I gave it the old college try.  My first thought?  HOLY CRAP, this ball is HEAVY!   I managed to throw a strike on the first shot as well (easy conditions) and felt some minor tugging in my quad and left hip muscle (I am a righty).  I also felt terribly winded.  Can you say cardiac deconditioning?!  At least with the pace of a league I won't be getting winded since there's breaks between shots.  During my practice session I threw some good shots and some brain dead ones (and naturally, I whiffed the first 7 pin I left)  I also missed one 10 pin as I rushing to the line because I was so excited to be back!!

The numbers:  203-162-178/543.  Not too shabby, since my last outing was in September 2009.  Like I mentioned earlier, I was SERIOUSLY sore the second day (Friday) and I dragged the left side of my body around the doctor's office where I work like Igor, but today I feel pretty good.  I will practice again next Wednesday to gear up for the league, which starts one week later.

I also ordered a new ball, a green/black Brunswick Avalanche.  I don't have the heart to take my Smokin' Inferno out of the bag just yet, so the Special Agent will have to sit on the sidelines for a while until I decide what will stay in the bag for the rest of the summer.

I am also bowling a mixed league in the fall, and it's going to be pretty nice since it's a shorter league (29 weeks), so I'll be done with league before April.  How cool is that?!  Thanks for asking again, Mark!

Bowling bowling bowling.  It is GOOD to be home.

Welcome back, Lisa.

Interesting to read your novella about your comeback.  You bowled pretty decently for that long of a layoff.  I like that you decided to order a new ball after one practice session.  You really are like the rest of us.

I will probably find myself in the same condition when our center reopens again for next season since they closed in Jan for remodeling and repairs.  I lost all of my bowling calluses already and that has me worried.  Thanks for the reminder about stretching before bowling.

I also had to take a break of several weeks some time ago, and it is frightening how tiring bowling can be if you are not used to it anymore: the wrist gets weak and you tend to grip too tight with the thumb, sliding leg/knee is aching...

Just give yourself some time to slip your body back into the routines. Bowling is IMHO like cycling: you hardly lose the fundamentals, but getting back (and staying up) after a long break does not make you Lance Armstrong immediately

Just try to do some light and frequent practice before the league starts, and do not force it!
