I was looking back through some older issues of the USBC magazine on bowl.com and came across something I thought was interesting. We’ve all walked into a new house and struggled to get lined up at the start of the league or tournament. Well this system might initially help with that. I actually tired this last night and it worked for me. Anyway here it is:
First find out what length the oil pattern is. Take that number and subtract 31. This will give you the approximate break point board to target.
Then find out the amount of oil applied to the lane. If it is <21 ML this is considered dry, 21 – 24 ML is medium, and >24 is heavy oil. Use this to determine the type of ball and the surface.
So last night the length was 40’ so the breakpoint was 9 and the oil was 19 ML. That told me I needed to use a highly polished ball with a 4000 grit surface. It seemed to work. Now this is only used in getting lined up with the shot. As the lane breaks down you still must move with it. Give it a try next time out and see if it works for you.
