Help with toe drag - SST-8's
« on: January 08, 2012, 12:03:46 PM »
My son and I both wear Dexter SST-8's.  Both are right handed.  My son drags his right foot behind him on his follow through.  The tip of the sole on his right shoe peels away from the shoe and won't stick back on.  We both use T3 soles on our right shoe.  I have no problem with my shoe.  We've tried using a wire brush to keep it clean and that works slightly.  We have also swapped soles and that seems to work a bit also.

I bought my other son a pair of SST8's for Christmas and on the web site it had a warning that these shoes a not good for someone who drags their toe.  So I guess it's a chronic problem with these shoes.

Has anyone had a problem with this and if so did you find a solution?   Can the sole be glued to the shoe?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Joe

I glued the front of the sole down with Krazy Glue. Since I don't switch the right sole, that worked out ok.

My pro shop guy gave me a easy solution just move it back 1/8 to 1/4in from the front the toe guard. Also my brother super glued his down in front. He just replace it with a new one and it was not that difficult to get old one off.

have seen 3 people at my local alley have toe problems with the as well as the bottom just splitting on push off foot.  2 have gone to 3g's and love them.  (on my suggestion i am toe dragger and have had no problems for three years with 3 gs)

Good timing on the post. I drag my toe some and started having issues with my SST 8's this past Friday in league. Went out to practice today and my T3 sole came clean off after my 3rd step. The front half of the T3 would not stay on my shoe and would fold under my foot.  I replaced the T3 with a T2(pro shop was out of T3's) and it stayed on, good as new. In my case I think the velcro on the sole(not shoe) was shot - maybe from the extra stress from dragging my toe?

I think it's worth noting my SST 8's are 5 years old so if I have to replace that sole every 5 years I'm fine with that.

+1 When I first got my 8s within two weeks my trailing sole was peeling off. I originally put my rubber sole on all the way to the top of the shoe thinking I wanted to try to better protect my toe cap area. Do to the peeling on that sole I wore out the velcro at the tip of the sole. I put on my other sole and made sure to move it back about 1/4 inch. No problems ever since.

Thanks to all those who replied.  I think we'll try moving the sole back a quarter inch and see how that works before using glue.  Good bowling to all!  And above all, have fun on the lanes.

I had the same problem - I tried to glue the sole on and it still kept peeling away. I called Dexter and they replaced the shoes for free - then I had to buy a product (I believe called powerstep) that Dexter sells to go over the tow - it replaces the T3 sole and is reinforced to prevent this from happening. Not the ideal solution - I think Dexter should have provided it - but I've had them for a about a year now with no more problems.
