Getting the most from practice
« on: January 28, 2004, 10:34:03 AM »
How much more beneficial would it be to practice on the PBA patterns given at pba.com as opposed to the typical old house shot for a 170-180 average bowler?

well in my house every thursday we put down the pba shots and then bowl on the house shot and i average 225 on our house shot, but on the pba shots my average is alot lower so i would have to say that if you dont bowl on any pba shots then why pratice them work on getting the house shot down and them move to the pros shot thats what i did

I was thinking that by practicing on a tougher shot, I'd probably develop my form and accuracy better if I really had to get it right to see positive results.

I would say if you can practice on the PBA shots and have a center willing to put them out, I bet it would increase your accuracy on the THS. However you would have to be able to read lane conditions and changes well in order to keep your average up- as even on THS depending on the number of bowlers per pair, the lines that they are playing and where this relates to where you normally play, you may have to make small or significant moves from week to week. I know that bowling in a tough house has improved my game in other houses, outside of the fact that I need to work on slower ball speeds on fresh, longer oil patterns. My home house throws out a short oil pattern so you have to keep your speed up to score, especially through the latter parts of games 2 and all of game 3.

I doubt it would be a big benefit for a 170-180 average bowler.  They have enough holes in their game (accuracy, lane reading, consistency, good release, spare shooting...) to be exposed by a THS.  A harder shot would magnify the mistakes, but they might not be accurate enough to learn to make the proper adjustments.  If they could recognize and adjust to the changes, they would average over 180 on a THS.  If the PBA patterns are available and cost the same, give them a shot, but a 200+ average bowler will learn more about their game throwing on them.
