STROKERS/What type of equipment/drillings?
« on: September 23, 2003, 11:03:21 PM »
I am changing my pitch and fetch style (cranker type)to more of a stroker type.So I am needing some advice as to what equipment people have been haveing succes with for this paticular style.I will still be getting descent revs but will cut the ball speed down to about 15-16 mph with less axis rotation and less tilt.I have been haveing trouble as of late with my travel league and need accuracy more than i do power. The stuff I currently have is all drilled mild.I have three carbide bomb solids drilled pin high 30,45,and 60 degree's.I have a cherry bomb drilled pin below ring 4"x90 degree's.I have a teal drilled 3-3/8x3-3/8 (ball worked well for me this weekend with stroker style). It seems to me that stuff drilled up more aggresive is going to work better for me so I can use less hand (not that I try to use any to begine with).Heres what I have access to right now all 15# 2 crunches,bombpearl,2 things,2 viper pearls, hercules, inferno and a sonic x.So What can I do with these that would work on a varity of house shots with different lengths and volumes of oil.please also take into account if I can use any of the stuff thats drilled already so I dont have to waste equipment.I also just checked the pitches on the teal and the fingers are pitched forward 1/4" (this might explain the great ease of release and comfort)I had forgot that I experimented on this ball and never realy threw it much.

The reason for this is when I would throw the ball natuarly they would be a little eratic except for when I stroked the ball then none of them would quite finish enough. So  I am looking for some insight on what might work for a weaker release and overall game. Thanks

A DICK,

For me, who if any style at all would call myself a power stroker.  All my stats are in the profile if you'd like to look.

For heavier oils I find the Track Enforcer to be a good ball to use.  Despite being a high load particle it offers good length and a nice backend move.  Mine is drilled pin under ring with CG kicked out.....like a 5x3 type.

For all aspects of mediums I've been using the Crimson Executioner.  I can find a line in and out with this bad boy.  It is drilled 5x3, gets down the lane long and makes a hard turn in the back.

For lighter oils I use a Red Fire drilled 5x5.  I polished the piss out of this ball to keep it from moving early.  It gets down the lane real long with a small controlled backend.  It can also be played on various mediums because it offers a large backend move as well.

For me as some sort of power stroker I prefer pearl or highly polished equipment.  I like the natural length they offer and the bigger backend to hit the pocket at a great angle.

I am impartial to sanded balls because of my faster rev rate they take off for the nose.  Most of the time though I get over under when I move in too deep.

So far the biggest company that hasn't worked for me was Storm.....except for the Too Hot which is condition specific for me. (again pearl)

Ok guys thanks so far to those who have replied.

Rag's it looks as though I might be leaning twoards drilling up some stacked equipment myself. This goes against every thing I have been doin the past few years and is completely oppisite of how I drill stuff.I guess I need stuff to be a little bit more dynamic natuaraly insted of using my hand to make it move so much. Thanks for your input and hope you heal up fast and come back bowling soon.

A P K I dont know if the polished stuff will help when I cut down on the revs let alone the erratic reaction I have been getting. But I will have some stuff polished it's just that I havent seen any real clean backends or definitive dry, what I have been seeing is alot of light buff to even out the reaction witch so far has been getting spotty & erratic.I guess if I got something with a low RG with a fast reveing core I could take more hand out of it.I guess I am going to have to trust using a polished ball and see how it will fit in.If your having succes with one it dont hurt to try.Do you see alot of clean backends to use the polished stuff? Thanks.

DownIn2001 I think that the crunch is close to the v2 so I know I will be drilling one of them thanks for the comments.

A DICK,

On the conditions I've used my Crimson Ex, this summer I bowled on a longer synthetic pattern.  The conditions were pretty heavy on the inside, it was a vertical say 7-7 wet/dry shot.  It was pretty tough to swing any ball unless you spun the cover off, or used a high load particle like the Enforcer to get it to move.

Using the Crimson Ex I threw the ball about 15mph give or take, and I played straight up the 7 to 10 board.  With enough revs or rotation, basically playing a lower track the ball would get down the lane and make a nice turn to the pocket.

This ball will skid on oil, but it's early rolling core and big backend make it suitable for decent backends even with longer oils up front.

I am currently experimenting with SCREAMING backends right now, hopefully the Crimson is the answer, or even my newly redrilled Buzzsaw XL.  I get over under with strong and weak equipment, so I figured I'd go back to a few medium pearls.

I like Rags am sort of a stroker/tweener, I am right handed and all of my equipment is drilled towards the strong side. The Pin locations are over ring finger, above and beside ring finger, beside and even with ring finger, and under ring finger and touching the line that runs thru center of grip. The CG's are all on the right side and range from 2" up to 3 1/2" from PAP. I have no label leverage drills, but have one on order at this time, with the PIN set a little higher than is normally used on the label leverage drill. I like polished/pearl balls most of the time as the lanes I bowl on are seldom heavier than medium/heavy oil. If I use a dull type ball such as the V2 sanded or Angle Evolution Extra on these conditions , I sand to 800 and then polish with 1 to 3 coats of Black Magic. (Yeah everybody, I'm the one that hated Black Magic until I got a spinner. Now I like it.)

quote:
4" X MB on VAL- Early roll and control on medium to oil
4" X MB Strong- Early strong hook
5" High Pin X MB Strong- Late strong hook
Grip Line High Pin X MB on Grip Line- Length and control on medium to dry

Plus40 are you talking about a degree layout. If not what are you calling a MB stong as in where to relation to your pap is it located other than the VAL.4xMB strong to me is MB 90 degrees to my pap(stacked). So it looks as if your keeping the MB stacked and just moving the pin higher for length.I have tried to use stacked(strong) drilling in the past but couldn't get control over the break point, maybe that will change with  my new style.
