Battling carry-down...
« on: December 25, 2003, 07:07:09 PM »
what kinds of adjustments do you make?  It used to be the 3rd game was my strongest, but this year I've really struggled.  They change the brand of oil, and I think that has something to do with it, but I'm looking for some other adjustments since mine are clearly not working very well.

Typically, I'm your down and in bowler shooting for around the 8 board.

If your comming over to heavy move a couple of boards to the left. If your comming in to light move a couple of board to the right and play it straighter up. Move your feet and target a couple of boards in either direction should get you back online.

Carrydown for me means two things maybe three.

1)less axis rotation bring ball into a roll sooner (reading pattern earlier) this may cause adjustments with feet depending on amounts of oil out there especially head oil.
2)Switch to a lower RG ball (RG=radius of gyration) again may help read the pattern a little earlier get less skid more roll.
3) Go to a ball with a bit more surface to adjust break point or targetting area.

This works for me but might not mean the same for you depending on style and equipment.

Playing around 8 could be a bit tricky depending on the pattern you are shooting at.  8 puts you right on the edge of wet/dry since many house shots give you a ounce-back area outside of 10.  To give you any reasonable help I'd have to know where your break point is and what adjustments you currently make to combat the problem.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

If it's a gradual change over the night, I find that every 3 or 4 frames I end up moving about a quarter to half board left, depending on the number of bowlers playing the same line I am, etc.

A sudden change in lane (or more often, a sudden change in the bowler) may require one of a couple things:

If you're on a normal house shot, move left , get some head oil.  Or, if you have a decent amount of oil outside and no-one's been out there all night, maybe move feet and line farther outside to get a fresh shot.

On a tougher shot, gutter to gutter, out of bounds, sport, etc., Use the 5-3 method, i.e. move your feet 5 boards and your target 3 boards in the direction you moved your feet.  Fine tune your adjustments from there.

Probably they changed to a lower viscosity oil. Too bad..

If there is carry-down with drying heads and mids I'd listen to Plus40's advices. But if it is not the case, you will need another strategy. Looking to your arsenal, seems like you have enough equipment to fight with carry-down. Main mistakes done by bowlers to play on carry-down is trying to hook the ball on backends. Try to get more midlane read by switching more early/aggressive ball. End-over-end type of roll works better. Let the ball arc before it hits the carry-down at the backends. Leftyhi-trak states this very well..
Rotating your fingers much less and pulling them inwards by staying behind and under the ball may help (in other words decreasing your axis tilt).

Hope this helps
