Going to the OPEN- What are YOU taking.
« on: March 11, 2022, 08:41:17 AM »
I'm going to finally get to go to the OPEN next week. Always wanted to go, just never had the time and the money at the same time before.

For all you other guys who are going, or who have been before, what variety of stuff are you taking?

Practice session went well, and I found a decent line playing tight around the third arrow with the black quantum.

Not much miss room (especially out), but ball would hold line decently with enough pop to carry.

Bowlers journal was NOT good for me. Not sure exactly what the pattern was, but it seemed short and hooky for me. Didn’t shoot well at all, but did see some who did, and they were shimming it up from out, playing around 5-7 at the arrows. One guy shot a good 700 something playing there, and two young ladies had exceptional sets playing the same area.

I’m just old now, and not able to repeat shots like I used to, but if you can, there are scores out here to be had.

Got doubles/singles tomorrow. Wish I had something not quite so aggressive, as everything I have was reading the pattern earlier than I wanted.

I try telling you guy every year stop taking these super strong early balls.

You know house bowlers do not listen.

Anyone offering an over/under on the number of Rotogrip Gems that will be on the ball returns of my four teams?  ;D

Over 7. Same guys will come back and claim how “tight” they were. No, your ball was exhausted at 25 feet and had nothing left down lane.

You might just win with that number. I've already seen several in my Challenge league and we are currently on a 37 ft pattern with moderate oil. Of course the scoring pace was seriously dropping toward the end of the first game and got worse as the night went on.

A few years ago I had a new bowler go to the Open with my group and he had a 6 ball roller. Dude had six different brands of balls and all six of them were the newest, biggest hook monster that each brand offered. Of course, he shot a very low 400 for each of the three sets.

Afterwards, he was asking for advice and when I said, 'Maybe have 6 different balls instead of six of the same ball', he just wanted to argue that they WERE different.

I could not explain to him(in a way he was willing to listen to) that the label on the ball didn't make it different.

I sincerely hope he has learned from his errors or he’s no longer with your group.

No longer with my group. Ironic how some big shot house 200+ bowlers gets such a pissy attitude when they are forced to admit they aren't as good as they believed.

In Baton Rouge, I had a new bowler quit after the second frame of the first game of singles. He was a 210+ house bowler. Shot mid 300 in team, barely 400 in doubles and when the two opens(with a gutter first ball) occurred at the start of singles, he was done. He packed up his stuff and sat in the bleachers. The last thing I heard from him was "F*** this tournament, I'm a better bowler than this"

That is one of the best things I've heard in a while.

It's definitely interesting watching the reactions from house bowlers here when they decide to bowl a local tournament ran on challenge or sport.

I'm probably gonna bring a few slower response balls, and a few faster response balls. I probably will not bring a hook monster, nor anything too basic. I don't have an arsenal, but here are some balls on the shortlist:

  • Purple Hammer
  • Radical Conspiracy Hybrid (pin down)
  • 900 Global Reality (pin down)
  • 900 Global Aspect (pin down)
  • 900 Global Flux Solid (pin up)
  • 900 Global HB Intensity (pin up)
  • Storm Trend 2 (pin up)
  • AMF Ninja SE (pin up)
  • 900 Global Respect (pin in ring)
  • Roto Grip Hustle PBR
  • Plastic
  • A literal stick of dynamite

Here is the best part, the guy drove to Baton Rouge...from Stockton, CA. 2000+ miles with one of our other bowlers.

I know that had to be a fun ride home.

That guy wouldn’t have liked me. I would have reminded him it looks like you’re a 120 bowler.

Some videos are popping up of people bowling well, seeing strong asymmetrical pearls in the middle of the lane later in the team sets, and right off the bat in minors looking pretty good. I'm leaving on Wednesday and bowl the 26-27th.

Jackal Ghost, Mythic Jackal, Shock, Fatal, Spare, and random lottery pick i'll decide when i'm loading my truck up to go to the airport in tow. New Blue Coral Venom is in consideration strongly.

The scores are looking pretty good, but still a small sample size yet.

Just saw a video on Facebook of a gentleman from CA roll an 808 series, and his team shot 3291. Looks like he was throwing a UC3, but I'm not 100% positive.

I do not recall scores being so high so early in the tournament. As of this morning (March 21st):

Teams
  • 3372
  • 3291
  • 3241
  • 3211

Doubles
  • 1391
  • 1389
  • 1358
  • 1355

Singles
  • 772
  • 757
  • 735
  • 728

Not going this year but based on 29 years I would take my Phase 2, Melee midnight jab, purple hammer, wine hustle and spare ball.  Basically rolly stuff that will hit without having to totally open up the lane

Well, got back home today. Guess not too bad for my first try.

Shot 590 in team, 553 in doubles, and 500 in singles.

Matchup is  CRITICAL. Hope you have the right ball in your hand, or the ability to obtain it in a moments notice.

I wished I had taken a weaker piece, which would have allowed me to play tighter line over the third arrow area. Had to try to swing what I had with me too much, and missed into the out of bounds too many times.

I also found out what a spare ball is for. Tried making tenpins during practice with my “regular” equipment, and then went straight away and got me a Storm Mix to shoot tens with. Take a spare ball, you’ll need it, lol.

Good luck guys. Go shoot a ton somebody.  ;D

Respectable showing for your first time there.

Spare balls are good for more than just 10 pins, especially on tougher conditions.

Good point.  I use my spare ball for everything except double wood on flatter patterns.  Without a spare ball 4s and 7s can be trickier than 10s.

If you don't me asking, what were your scores? And what did you see on the lanes?
