Going to try the 2 hand delivery
« on: June 23, 2008, 01:33:18 PM »
Just for summer kicks, I've decided to try my "hand" at the 2 handed delivery.

Any advice?

Grips or No Grips?

Finger pitch ideas/preferences?

just my personal take, but why go 2-handed if you're going to throw conventional grip? The whole point of the 2-hand release is to create maximum revolutions...which would then be lowered due to the lack of grips.

Also, I would suggest trying with some equipment that's a bit lighter than you normally throw.

AFAIK, you also need properly drilled balls for a 2-hand-use, with a different pin position from a standard fingertip grip. Not sure on details.

Many of the no thumbers I've seen often use a layout which puts the pin above the bridge by a short distance, so it depends on what equipment you already have as to whether that would be suitable for the purpose. It's unlikely that anything drilled close to leverage would be any use I would think...

All of my resin equipment hooks off the lane when I do it. My XXXL is the only ball I can throw that way and still hit the head pin. FWIW.

you really need to remeasure your pap and drill balls of ur new pap, most likely a pin distance of 5.5 will be ur best bet, or a 1.5. I can throw both 2 handed and one handed, but i prefer one handed due to accuracy and consistency, also if u dont generate enough ball speed the two handed delivery becomes too much as terms of hook and carry.

A new ball will never make u better nor will agruing constantly make u right so shut up and practice.

There are two hands!  One can use a heavier ball!

Most kids start this because when they are thowing 6 pounder one handed they get frustrated watchin it bounce off the pins.  So they grab a 10 pounder and throw two hands NATURALLY!

You aren't accounting for the additional revolutions on the ball.  Alot of people throwing with the 2 handed release don't necessarily throw the ball excessively harder than their normal shot, because they are worried about being consistant at their release and that emphasises the hand they put in it.  Yes, they will throw it harder, but not going from 16mph to 22mph.  So the lighter ball would help get it down lane so it doesn't overreact with the additional revs.  Also if you have something lying around you can play with the drilling on, try a drilling for length or something 6 X 2 to make it alot weaker.  Theres a few two handers in my area that are pretty good.  This works well for them.  While they throw 15# normal, they throw 14# two handed, and use weaker/midline equipment, and its not usually less than 4-4.5" pin strength.

The ones in my area who throw two handed: one who has won hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the other who has (weak arms) and appeared on good morning america recently.  Both throw balls heavier than they would throw if throwing one handed.

For the two hand bowlers. Only time will tell how long their bowling days will be. When you are young you can bend backwards and throw the ball. Let's wait when their delivery stance and finish starts to feel unpleasant. Which one will give out more quickly. The spinal or knee support. The two hand delivery looks powerful but it comes with a price. Again, only time will tell. At your teens, wow! twenties, great! thirties, fair forties, uuf!. By then you cannot stand completely straight and cannot bowl when you are in your 50's and 60's. Just give a thought into the mechanics of the movements involve and the long term effects of said movements.

For an in-depth, actually interesting take on the two-handed style, check out July's Bowlers Journal. It's obviously not out yet, but when you or your pro shop/bowling center gets a copy, pick it up and flip to my article. I break down each step of the two-handed style, and provide a "Frame by Frame" analysis of Jason Belmonte's game. For the article, I interviewed Belmo...so I now think I'm pretty knowledgeable about the style, and I think that fact comes across in the article.
