Getting closer to the line?
« on: June 20, 2008, 05:02:05 PM »
I pride myself on being fairly good.  Im a 210-215 average bowler, & im fairly accurate even on a THS(im upset if i miss my mark by more than a board or so)

anyway, i always end up about 3ft from the line, it drives me crazy.  I have no clue how to get closer, none, so i figured i would post here.

Now, i dont want to be right AT the line, but 6" to 1ft back would be nice, 3ft away is just unacceptable.

anyone have any tips??

Shawn

Ron,

Is it really necessary to get closer if you are consistent? I generally stop about 18 inches from the foul line. Thanks for the info about the article in BTM.

It is nice to start the ball in oil....most of that stuff is over the foul line.

No it's not,

I stop 6' (yes that's right 6') behind the line (right at the front edge of the ball return.  I used to stop at the line but stuck once and fell in the lane.  I have been bowling this far back from then on.  Pretty consistant Shot a 300, been close again a few times.

The only inconsistancy that I have is from the injury to my leg because when I stuck I pulled my hamstring, and it never healed back right.

My ball does start in the oil. It lands softly about 1 foot beyond the foul line.

It will take some shots to build confidence, maybe a foul or two, but that's what training is for

I don't worry about making a foul. It never enters my mind. I, like livespice took an extremely hard fall out onto the lanes 3 years ago and at my age of 68 at the time, it wasn't as easy getting up and return to bowling as it would have been had I been 20 or 30 or 40 years or so younger. Thus my sub-concious fear of the foul line....

Nothing works best for EVERYONE and on a house wall you can get away with anything. When bowlers slide too far from the foul line they are forced to ether “heave” the ball over the foul line or actually lay the ball down on the approach. Well the lane is already long enough and there is no oil on the approach, so that is all that needs to be said about that.

When a bowler heaves the ball over the foul line they are forced to stay in the ball too long missing the ideal release point in the swing. Missing the ideal release spot and heaving the ball over the line can affect accuracy, revs, and produce an under-over ball reaction (on sport shots). Staying in the ball too long can also force you to move your thumb pitch in the reverse direction forcing you to squeeze the ball unnecessarily and that is very detrimental to a good release.

The fix is simple and easy but I don't want to reveal it until the next BTM comes out.
