Golf and Bowling
« on: October 06, 2003, 09:38:21 PM »
A couple of years ago I used to practice bowling at this one center in particular.  I would meet up with a couple of guys and afterwords we would talk and have a couple of beers. After doing this for most of the year, I hear from one of the other guys that "Gill" thinks that I talk about bowling too much, despite the fact that we’re in a BOWLING ALLEY.  Here we are actually bowling and trying to learn something.  But, he goes on to tell me that Gill doesn't want to have a beer with me afterwords.

But, here’s the kicker.  Ok, I get over it, but one day when we finished bowling.  The 3 of us including this Gill character were putting our stuff away.  The two of them were talking about their follow through (I believe it was).  I told them that my follow through wasn’t the best today during practice.  Then the 2 of them said some other statement that was related to golf, not bowling at all.  That made me feel left out and I thought it was rude. I assumed they were talking about bowling based on their comment, but it was a golf related topic in a bowling alley and after we just finished bowling several games for cripe sake.

But, here’s my point, I DON’T golf, yet I get the feeling it is thrown in my face.  I no longer meet up with that bunch anymore because they talk about golf all the time despite the fact we’re IN A BOWLING ALLEY.  Gill has a problem with me talking about bowling despite all of us being in a bowling alley.  So, I won’t bother to go up there and speak to him anymore.  I see nothing wrong with talking about bowling in a bowling alley, but I do have a problem with somebody belittling me because I talk about it in the right place.  Yet, Gill talks about golf all the time.  I wonder why he bothers coming to the bowling alley if that's all he talks about and everybody else is to bow to his golf topic.

So, here’s my question.  I’m sure most of you wouldn’t appreciate me bringing up chess all the time. I used to be a chess champion in my youth, but no longer play due to time constraints.  I’m sure I would get flamed on this board all the time for doing something like that.  Why is that golf constantly appears from time to time when this is a bowling board?  I feel that is rude to others that may not have a thing to do with golf.  I don’t care if most of you golf or not, but this is a bowling forum isn’t it?
I want to have a 220+ average like everybody else around here, so give me fresh oil.

the main reason that golf is mentioned so much is the similarities that can be drawn between the two sports.  they're both individual sports, balance is very important, and conditions in which the sports are played vary widely.  these are just a few of many similarities.  analogies are very effective in teaching techniques, and many can be drawn between the two sports.

i'll even bet that some of the mental preparations and thought processes used in tournament chess could be applied to bowling.  i understand your frustration with feeling left out, but i doubt that it's an intentional ploy.  just enjoy your friends and don't read too much into the golf conversations.

Bennett,
I can only assume that this is the same house that doesn't put out oil anymore ?!?! Right ??

Golf is brought up because a lot of bowlers golf....for that matter, a lot of people golf,..period.  Therefore, it's a popular sport that most anyone can take up.

Many people also draw comparisons to the two games.

I would suggest that if you don't like golf talk on here,...don't read the posts because I doubt very highly it will go away.

Also, this is a community of people, people who have a common thread....bowling.

As for your friends...why is it rude that they talk about a sport you don't play ?  What because you don't play they can't talk about it ??  What if one of your buddies played chess ??  Would you STOP talking about it if the other guys didn't ??

I doubt it...............

just one of those things........deal with it............
