I'm not sure how many areas something like this would work in, but I think it is a great idea.
I joined a bowling league a few years ago in a local 10-lane house. We had problems with a lot of absences on teams when the weather became nice in the Spring. We talked about shortening the bowling season, but then decided that since 80% of the guys enjoyed golf, we would try to incorporate the two "sports." Like I said, it's a 10-lane house and we had 8 teams buy in. So we have a league of 40 people which fills an otherwise empty alley on Friday evenings and we get a nice discount at a local golf course. The year-round commitment is a little much for some, so we made it an every other week league. Handicap for both the bowling and golf. We also use a 7-point system for both. 2 point per game / 1point for total in bowling. In golf we use 5 individual points (you vs your opponent) and 2 points for team total.
One of the best things about the league is that our team's best bowler is our worst golfer. He used to not talk much to some of the other guys because he got tired of them always asking for bowling tips. Well, now the tables have turned and he is asking for help with just about everything to do with golf. His overall attitude has improved greatly.
How many of you would be interested in this type of a league?
