Good ball for dry lanes?
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:07:00 AM »
Can some of you recommend a good ball for dry conditions please?  Preferably from anyone but  Lanemaster, Lane 1 and Ebonite.  A friend of mine is looking to buy something and wanted me to ask you on here what you'd recommend.  Thank you.

Brunswick Power Groove Dry/R
Roto-Grip Neptune

Those are the ones that I've read/seen bowlers have the best opinions and success with.  Keep in mind I'm assuming you are looking for something with a reactive cover.  Otherwise...for really dry lanes, you might want to go Urethane or even Plastic.

try Track. they made some excellent dry lane balls, however, they are discontinued. fortunately, these balls are common today, and cheap! if i had to pick just one, id go with a desert heat.

good luck!

I would say the Power Groove Dry/R or any Urethane ball with a stronger core (like the older hammer balls or the Slate Blue Gargoyle by Visionary).

Right now my Punisher with 4000 grit + high gloss and 5" Pin to Pap layout has given me a great look on toast with a nice controllable backend and it duels as my spare ball!

Hmm Not sure maybe you can ebay one of these. My Blazing inferno or Roto-grip Sonic X is great for dry conditions. Preferably the Roto, much better carry. Goes a bit longer with a great snap at the end.

Don't know about the Sonic X, but the Blazing is not something you want to throw on toast...trust me.  I've had two of them for the past 3 years, and originally bought the first one for my "Dry Lane" ball.  The activator coverstock is much too aggressive for DRY lanes and the core is no slouch either.  The Blazing's really work well on broken down shots where oil has been spread around but the backends are flying.  Gets you length with good read but doesn't over react.

I think people confuse short oil patterns with real dry lanes.  Dry to me is when the ball checks up at the arrows and rolls out at 30 feet straight into the left ditch.  Or maybe even throwing as hard as you can from board 39 to 3 and still having trouble keeping it on the righthand side of the headpin.  Short oil is all about controlling backend reaction and getting your ball to the correct breakpoint.

Try the InSite Prophecy...the ball received a great review in Bowler's Journal magazine and I can personally attest to its' ability to work on dry lanes.  We have a lot of bowers reporting the same about this ball.

Ha, ha, ha!!!!
Better have a good deal of speed or a REALLY, REALLY weak drill.
or not really dry lanes.

Try a polished Visioanry Blue/Green Centaur to handle true dry-ish (just short of needing plastic balls) lanes.

I agree with Charlest, Neptune is a medium/light oiler at best. Make sure to drill it weak and have some polish handy. Mine is pin over almost 5", 2000 and polished and it's a medium oiler for me.

it depends strongly on personal style I guess, no?

I play an XXXL for dry lanes (I know no Lane#1 wanted but hey I am only giving an advice) and this ball is drilled  label and rather strong... why? Cause I am a power tweener almost a cranker and this ball though it is plastic makes its curve with the core inside... so beware not only about the ball to choose but also the layout to go with.

try the Brunswick BVP Punisher...thats the ball that I use for dry lanes and I have not been disapointed.  Very controllable on dry lanes, but still has the ability to play on medium oil.

I have to place my vote for the slate blue....urethane with a core? what more could someone want?

Track's Desert Heat is very very good on dry, but goodluck finding one.
