Good ball for skid/flip?
« on: February 15, 2011, 03:00:52 PM »
Hey all,

I am a medium speed (14mph), low-rev bowler.  My average is around 165.  Since I'm low revs, I generally stand at 12 and aim at 10 and just send it straight up the line and let the core/cover bring it back.

My main ball is a Mutant Cell.  I like the ball a lot, except it seems to burn up in my first game of league because there's not enough carry down.  If I move in a bit, I don't have enough revs and the ball just skids out.  Either way, I end up with a very lazy hit.  As such, I'd like to get a ball that will store some energy and make a more aggressive move to the pocket (skid/flip).  I don't want to shine my Mutant Cell since I like the reaction it gives in games 2 and 3.  What comes to mind is some sort of hybrid or pearl.  I'm thinking about:

1) Infinite Theory (I was torn between the MC and the Theory and went with the MC because it was more proven at the time).

2) Mutant Cell Pearl (I really like my MC)

3) Virtual Energy (I had also been looking at the VG)

4) Victory Road (This is getting great reviews.  Looks very strong.  Could be a good benchmark ball)

I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice with respect to these balls given my goal.  I'm also open to other suggestions.

Thanks,

SirCochese

just my two cents.....

if you can get your hands on a reign, id punch up one of those. most skid/flip ball ive ever thrown. they are still around, be too hard to find. but if your looking for something new id go with a victory road because it should be the reign replacement. the virtual energy for me was quite rolly, and from what ive seen, so is the MCP. don't have an opinion on the infinite theory yet, because i haven't seen one thrown.  I would go for a reign or victory road.

The Victory Road is definitely Skid/flip. It flips harder than my Hammer Burn and that ball flips pretty angular too. I just had my victory road drilled and man does that thing glide through the heads and unleash fury on the backends

I own a Virtual Energy, Reign, and Victory Road. The Victory Road by far has the most snap on the backend out of the three. It is ridiculous how hard it stores its energy and makes a hard turn. It's a very skid/flip ball but for me it's very controllable as well. I would definitely look at the Victory Road if you want a true skid/flip ball.

While not as strong as some of the balls mentioned, the 607A SE is extremely angular and saves a ton of energy for the backend.  I throw one (I too am a down and in player) and I cannot say enough good things about it.  Best ball purchase I've ever made.

I'll suggest the Columbia 300 Ransom and it's been praised by many.  Check it's track record!

2010 is the first time joining a league since 1999. Over a 10 year lay off and I haven't lost much of my game.

HG-300 x 1, HS-780 (Nov. 2010)

In the Bag:

Columbia World Beater, Columbia Outburst, Storm Invasion, Columbia Ransom, Columbia Pure Swing, Columbia Burst, Storm Natural, Spare ball-T-Zone

The 607 is good for the down and in guy, but it doesnt open up the lane well when you need to....I just got rid of mine and went Bank Pearl, clears the heads great and makes a strong but controllable move...carries better than any ball Ive ever had, hits like a truck! I can open up the lane or play down and in with a bit more head oil effectively.

I'll report on the 607A as I am getting one drilled today.  I'd kinda guess that I'd disagree with those that can't open up the lane with it......depending on your stats. abilities, layout and conditions bowled on.  I have seen a number of players open up the lane with a 607A.  Anarchy would be a good choice also.....Victory Road for underneath Anarchy.  718A for more than the 607A.

I had my 607 drilled 65x4.5x30....my favorite layout. I could get it to the pocket from anywhere, I just couldnt carry if I opened it up..so to speak....I only carried playing it more straight up.

Since, you are looking at Storm/Rg....I'd look at the Anarchy or Victory Road.

Minor update.  I too a video of myself and have more accurate speed/rev counts.  Not sure if it changes anything, but it looks like I'm actually throwing 16.3mph and ~175rpm.

The hy-road is a great ball also for that, get a nice snappy backend too. I know the ball shouldn't make the bowler but after getting this and a virtual gravity my avg shot right up from around where you are to a 190. Try and go to a few test days, if you have any of those near you, try before you buy! GL
