Good bowlers on THS

SASBA South just held a tournament for SS (over 60).  Top two averaged 250+ for 20 games.  Plus these two are 70+.  The really good ones just don't seem to age

Whether  THS or tournament pattern the biggest advantage this super senior sees is not having to deal with a bunch of high rev kids blowing up the pattern.

Averaging 250+ for 20 games is throwbot numbers. Doesn't matter what pattern.

I can see that but on the other end of the spectrum, I have experienced some super seniors killing a pattern by using older urethane stuff.

Not sure what there is to kill if guys were using urethane.  Talking about good seniors, not Friday morning seniors mixed league.  I use urethane on wet dry house shots, and super short tourney patterns.  Most top seniors I know do the same.

I've seen it happen and experienced it often, where the breakpoint on a THS can get pushed down unexpectedly by one or two guys using urethane right in the track area.    Which I would equate to being similar to high rev guys blowing up the pattern

Hate to be argumentative, but the amount of oil and the places it can be pushed by urethane on a house shot shouldn't do any more than force a boomer to go another board wider to get around the carrydown.   Urethane is not going to make a house shot tougher, although it can make a flatter pattern ( like the Bear or high volume short patterns ) tougher.  In my experience of sometimes throwing urethane on a house shot, the only person impacted by carrydown is me playing close to the oil line, not anyone throwing resin.  High rev guys are blowing it up faster than I can carry it down.  THS is all about carry.  Anyone worth their salt should own the pocket with any ball in their bag.  When I use urethane on a house shot it is all about being able to go a bit more direct to the pocket to help my carry.   

Neither carrydown or blowing up the heads is usually much of an  issue on a THS.  It can be a much bigger factor on flat patterns where urethane can become a carrydown issue, and the boomers can blow up the heads in any area where us straighter guys want to play

For the most part I agree, however, I have seen many a bowler using urethane or plastic  and also cover 30 boards because of their slow speed.  The resulting shot is more difficult because they cover the whole lane. 

But this is my experience where I bowl, can't say what others might be seeing.  Just wanted to say it does happen.

I use urethane to keep from covering boards. My main argument focused on higher level players using urethane.  No question slow speed seniors and cosmic bowlers using plastic can really push the oil down

I understand what you are saying, but my group of guys on Thursday nights wins alot of games by blowing patterns apart then moving in. We stay disciplined in what we are doing, and that is a key to winning. I am sure in your eyes the pattern would be annhilated but to us we are making it more scorable.

Maybe we are talking semantics here, but my definition of blowing up a pattern is moving in right away and blowing up the middles.  What you are talking about is a proper way to attack any pattern be it nationals, or a house shot.  Modern balls are going to break down any pattern pretty quickly.  Starting further right and leaving yourself a place to move as the track becomes more defined isn't blowing up a pattern.  In fact that is the reason that seniors often score so well when the kids are not out there starting inside 15 board right out of the gate.  Most of us seniors learned the game when you had to play the pattern, not simply blow a hole in it anywhere you wanted.
