Good job, ball companies!

So... i'm just gonna say it. The quality of bowling ball manufacturing, these days, just plain sucks. We've taken SEVEN balls now that have cracked completely in half. Brunswick's. Columbia's. Storm. Ebonite. Lane1. Coverstock pits, cracking around the finger holes, mis-marked cg's and etc..... MY GOD! Frankly, Hammer and Rotogrip have the highest manufacture quality and they're the only two brands i recommend, this season. I just can't justify paying alotta money for crap balls and i sure as hell think it's shameful that these companies pass on the crap that they do. Questions? Comments? Post them....

Columbia, Hammer, Ebonite and Track are all made by Ebonite in one plant in Hopkinsville, KY by the same crew. If Hammer is "good" then they're all good. If Ebonite or Columbia are "bad", then they're all bad.
 
Storm,and ROto-Grip are all made by Storm in Utah. If Storm is "bad" then Roto-Grip is also bad. If Roto-grip is good, then Storm is good.
 
Cracking is 90% environmental: either the driller did something he was not supposed to do or the balls were put in cold, heat or humidity or stored inappropriately. Yes, some cracking comes from the curing process but most do not.

Ahh.. Charlest, two years away from this site but good to see that you're still a pompous a-hole. :-) Thanks for the reply tho. Good points as i've always respected your thoughts and opinions. ;-)

I have drilled up close to 200 balls over the past 5 years from all the companies listed and I have had 1 ball crack on me. I think alot of the cracking issues are due to user error. You cannot keep your bowling stuff in your trunk in the summer or your garage ever. You are asking for trouble. I have also seen a lot of balls drilled with the space between the bridge way too small, which is gonna lead to cracks starting in the bridge area.
 
I personally never keep my bowling stuff in the car for very long and keep my bag in the house until I am going to use it.
 
This is just mt 2 cents on this issue..

My garden gnomes enjoy the company of about 10 bowling balls that have cracked recently (within the last two years). The most recent being my Total Inferno.

 

Laast month, I wanted to take my Break Out to Vegas with me only to find it had cracked all the way around the ball..

 

Now, all of my ball are stored in their boxes up off the ground and I live in So Cal so there is very little tempeture extremes..

 

Every single manufacture is out in the garden right. Brunwick is ahead of Global 900 by one..

I know I am only a single example, but I always keep my equipment in my car year around here in the Dallas metro area.  This year we have experienced single digits in the winter (car is outside) to 113 degrees this summer.  No cracking issues.  I have had balls crack that are sitting in my closest in my house that were stationary for a year.  Someone speculated that gravity working with the position of where the ball is resting could cause the core to put enough constant pressure on the cover to crack it.

No matter where you put your bowling ball it experiences gravity. More then likely it is a slow reaction process to the glue used on finger and thumb inserts. Or just the ever changing expanding and contrasting of materials to the weather.

I've only had a couple of balls crack
 
Hammer Black Widow - after about 4 years of usage
Hammer Big Blue Pearl - within 3 months of drilling it
Track Kinetic Pearl - within 3 months of drilling it
Global 900 S40 - same week I drilled it

I always appreciate your comments and I always value your opinion .. but I have to ask a question relative to your response! What is the length of time you hold on to balls? I don't think the cracking happens to balls 3-6 months .. I THINK it happens to balls held 1 year or longer!That's only an opinion!

I've had 3 balls crack on me.    a Reign of Fire, Tropical Heat, and Theory,
 
The RoF happened last season, and it was in the weight hole, so it wasnt like the shell split open.
 
the Tropical Heat "started"  about 3 weeks after i had it drilled up after last christmas...  it started spiderwebbing all around the switch grip sleeve..  and when the start of the season happend, i went to grab the ball to do some practice and the shell had split open...
 
The Theory, i just happened to roll the ball over cuz i was heading out to do some practice 2 days after i noticed the TH split, and found this one had done the same thing...  
 
Crazy thing is both balls sat in my bedroom on the floor since last april...  
 
 No my proshop guy has heard a few things..    1 is that since the companies are having to put out so many balls so fast now, they dont let them cure as well as they use too.....   2 is that once the ball is drilled, it becomes brittle, but as long as the ball is being used, all the chemicals and compounds that are used to make the ball stay in motion... but if the ball sits for a extended period of time, everything settles to the bottom..........   sounds weird i guess, but i kinda believe it.....
 
But its funny as i have had some balls, for years and no issues at all, and they are still being used...... and then i have two like the Theory and tropical heat lol.......
