Best way to destroy old bowling balls....
« on: July 03, 2010, 05:00:27 AM »
I have quite a few old junk and cracked bowling balls my alley has gave to me over some time... describe to me what would be your favorite way to destroy or get rid of bowling balls. we have thrown them down hilly streets, off building, but are running out of thoughts... if any one could help me it would be much appreciated! thanks to all!

You dropped it 20 feet down and it shattered? I beg the differ. I threw one out of a moving car at 50 mph it hit the ground bounced real high and went into the woods (purposely did it on a dead end so it wouldn't hit anyone or anything). Went in got the ball and it only had a hairline crack that spanned less than half the ball from the thumb hole.

No it works. It has to land on the concrete parking stop, if it hits asphalt it will bounce for days.

I don't know what part of the country you are in but here there's a bowler that gets the cracked ones from the lanes and my shop, drills a large hole in them and sticks them on his fence posts ( he lives in the country ) and it's a sight to see. He says, one day, he'll have them all the way around his 4 acres, we'll see if he gets that many or not.

When I used to live it texas i would give them to my x boss. he owns a little land a a small private plane. He picked up a junk car body, set it in the field and would see if he or his passenger could drop a ball and hit the car and if so from how high. If they were not completely shattered he would reuse them. Every month or so he and his pilot buddies would go clean up the mess and dispose of it.

If they are bright colours like the ball picture they would look neat buried halfway in flowerbeds or perhaps even just in the grass in your lawn. Likewise, if you had several, you could make a border for a flower bed or line a pathway.

if you had a bunch of them you could use them as a garden border instead of bricks.

I think there was some guy that built all kinds of things with them -  stuff like pyramids and fences.

If you are close to Tulsa you could donate them to the guy that is building a peace monument - http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070428_8_D3_hBuil26268&breadcrumb=religion

I've also seen people use them as fence post toppers.

I've given a few to the neighborhood kids to smash up.  It usually keeps them entertained for about an hour.

Of course I have to supervise them, and cleaning up the pieces is a pain in the a--, but they really enjoy it.

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/14475  - here's a couple of ideas.

I don't know where I copied them from, but I have a couple of pics on my computer of coat racks where the ball is the base.

There is also a place in Oregon that has several displays.  Should be able to find it by searching for bowling ball tree.  I think it was called Funny Farm - at least that's what the picture on my pc is named.
