Good Spare ball?
« on: July 25, 2004, 05:07:11 AM »
I'm in the market, and I was wondering, what is the best (straightest) spare ball out right now in your opinion?  ANyone know how hard those new team storm balls are?  That blue one looks nice.

Hey,
I'm not sure about the best, but I got a 15 lb. Ebonite Maxium.  The blue, white, and black one.  You can have it if you want it, just pay shipping.  It's been plugged about 3 times, but still looks good.  Let me know.

Anything plastic, BUT, for durability buy a Maxim or White Dot... My Optyx Dragon is WAY cool, but, that plastic shell is not that HARD

I got a optyx dragon. It actually hits hard enough for a strike ball I think. In fact, the other night I was swinging it! Yes, I said I was swinging a spare ball. It was nearly the enitre lane. The owner is out fo town so the lanes havent been oiled.

andy - from what i've heard, and the way i understand it, single-color balls have the hardest shell (roll the straighest) who needs all these girly, multi-colored spare balls anyway?

I'd go for a White Dot or a Blue Dot.

when you get the ball drilled, remember to get the pin placed squarely on your pap, for a nice even roll.

I have seen a few of the "sports series" balls, and they seem to go pretty straight. I've thrown the basketball, and it was pretty dead on. Im not sure if any of them are any different but I think they are good spare balls! Just cant find them anymore, no one wants to get rid of them They should make one with a little bowling ball inside it though!

I just got the Big Blue Spare free with my Big Blue Pearl, and the Spare is the straightest spare ball I've thrown yet, you can get the Spare at the going rate of a plastic ball without having to get the high end stuff, but I'm very impressed with how straight the Big Blue Spare goes.

My Storm Spare now is look rather matt ;(
but throw stright on 3rd arrow is hitting in pocket. (medium oil cond)
For me I got to target half ball wide to right, like I would like to hit the pin by left side of ball.

UH guys, you do realize I'm looking for a ball that won't hook, right?  You've kind of just ruled out the soccer ball.....

I had a vis a ball, but it tracked up and started hooking.

I now use an ebonite maxim, and it doesn't hook at all, unless I put a bunch of hand in it.

Andy you dont have to worry about the soccer ball hooking for you. 1) we never see conditions that dry, except some tourneys 2) you dont have that much hand to MAKE it hook. I am thinking of trying to find a NIB soccer ball if anyone has them. IF YOU HAVE A 15# NIB SOCCER BALL, MESSAGE ME!

Here's a little comparison.

White Dot Hardness: 75-78 D-scale
Storm Spare: 84-86 D-scale

Storm Spare = Straighter.

Looks like you already have the answer.  Anyway, there is so little difference in most of them, it's not a big concern.  If you turn the ball pretty hard and don't tone down your release at all, it might be important.  But most people straighten out their release some.  With a "normal" spare release, there probably isn't a board of difference in them.
