Bowling center head games
« on: April 28, 2003, 11:42:34 PM »
There is a bowling center in our area where my average is much lower than any other house I bowl in.  The lanes are difficult, but I don't see them as being that outrageous.  I simply struggle week-in and week-out.  In fact, I seem to enjoy sport condition over what I face in this house each week.

I know as an advanced-level bowler I should be able to find SOMETHING that will work, and I have tried everything I know...balls, hand positions, speed, lines.  And I usually leave embarrassed at not being able to find something that will work

So all you bowling PhD's out there....are there...

1.  Some houses that simply don't match up to a bowler no matter how much he/she  tries to adjust?

OR

2.  Is there a suggestion that will enable me to adjust my mental game to adjust to this place?

Nevbowl:  Are you talking about the lanes at Nellis?  Unless the've changed drastically no one is shooting big numbers there.  How are you doing compared to the other people in the league.

I have a center like this in that I call "The HOuse of Pain". The wood is so old, that wehn the old manager took me down several lanes to look at the wood boards, he pointed out the HUGE crevices between boards where the oil actually flowed down and into them as balls rolled over the board.

This past Monday we had, INITIALLY, all the oil that we had not had in the past 3-4 months. By the 7th frame of the first game, I hit adjacent boards as my target and one went thru the nose while the 2nd left a washout. By the way that a regular occurrence at this house.

It is, of course, an AMF house and since the manager left 4-6 weeks ago, it has gotten worse.

My only choice has been to use pearl urethane or a Blue Dot, start both in the "oil" and swing it out to 7/8 board where there is NO OIL, literally. ABC certification ???  Maybe in 1965 ???

SrKegler... Its Texas Station, a bowling palace as far as a facility is concerned, but for quite a few people, it is a challenging place where they carry a lower average.  An interesting side note, I know a few people that bowl really well there, and can't seem to do anything anywhere else.

As far as Nellis is concerned, I practice there a couple of times a week, and have no real problems there.  Granted, you never really know what you are going to see until you roll a ball or two, but the shot there is definitely playable.

Sawbones... It actually IS a challenge in that I have tried more things in preparation for that league and devoted more practice games on those lanes than anywhere else.  In a bizarre sense my overall game is probably better because I have tried things I never thought I would because nothing else worked on a reliable basis.

I always go there ready to shoot big, saying "I've got something for it tonight" and aside from a few 600s, usually walk out disappointed with a 550-575.

Charlest...As I mentioned, this place is far from a dump...it is a very very nice facility.  The people there are great and I have no complaints about it as a place to bowl.  It is just a challenge that I, and several of my contemporaries, have yet to master.

What do the bowlers who succeed there have in common?  Why are they matching up when you aren't?

Answer that question, and I suspect you'll figure out what you need to do to succeed there as well.

The house I grew up in was tough too.  The highest sanctioned series for the life of the lanes was 756, with the high game being 290 (naturally, the 290 was one of the games for the 756).  Best game I witnessed there was a lady who shot 279 during a moonlight madness New Year's Eve party (and yes, she was drinking quite heavily before, during, and after the game).  Unfortunately, the house no longer exists.

I have a situation with just 1 pair in the house.  33 and 34.  They are just evil!  There are stories of a ritual sacrifice that took place there!  I just seem to have trouble on the pair.  Mostly mental but it seems everytime something happens weird it is there.  My solution is that I am going to practice most of my open practice this summer there if I can.  Work on my basics and fundamentals, just see what happens.  I have been to houses that have ate my lunch and then click it's my turn.    I find the answer.  I think it is just being persistent.

Please disregard this post.  Testing something out to see how far back I can read posts.  The original post is from 4/29/2003 2:42 PM.   There should be eight posts above mine in reply, the last dated 4/30/2003 1:27 PM.  Want to see if they show up when I reply to this.

Edited to add dates.  And to add that this is about as far back as I can see.

There are certain centers that just have some bowlers number, and most of that of course is mental.
On the other hand maybe the center in question is finally sick and tired of the inflatted averages that have popped up all the place, and decided to make it bowling again. Instead of stand left throw right

Nevada---While there are not as many brickyards around today as compared to the past, they do still exist and the house you describe seems to fit. If one must bowl in such a house, they need to have a mindset before they bowl that allows them to bear down on spares and not expect to string strikes. With that mindset, it can actually be fun to be that challenged and see how close you can come to shooting a 600.

If it is truly a brickyard, no one will tear the place up, but if many others bowling in that house are able to carry over 200 averages, then one needs to analyze ones game to see where the weaknesses are and work on improving them.

Many yrs ago we had a brickyard in Tulsa and the best bowlers in Tulsa loved to compete against each other in that house. They felt it showed who the best bowlers really were. So its possible to turn what seems like a negative into a postivie. Bones

My club house (10 lanes, 1994 Brunswick) used to be renowned to be difficult until they got a new oil machine last year for more than a decade. Only one 300 game had been played there in this time. My personal average there was 10 or even more sticks under par. The lane simply was difficult to play. Even with a good line to the pocket the pins would not fall. With the new oil machine, there have been now at least 3 300 games in 10 months, and I found it now much easier to play. I also do not need the tough particle equipment to make the ball move properly, a strong peral reactive works from the start. I think the back end is much cleaner now. But last week they tried a new lane conditioner with higher viscosity, and suddenly the average dropped by 20 (for anyone who tried the new oil).

Houses can be very different and hard to come by, no question. But, after all, it is the challenge to find that minimal solution that keeps you in play, without splits and open frames galore. You will not string turkeys, but you can still be competitive. It is just not that... satisfying?
