Got a buddy looking for a new ball. He needs your help!!
« on: December 26, 2003, 05:36:10 PM »
He is a righty. Throws the ball between 15-17 mph. has high revs. And can play anywhere around the outside(not sure exactly what board he prefers.)It's hard to give an oil pattern lay out because they change it every week.

Right now he is only running about a 150 average, but a lot of that, I think< has to do with his current ball. He is throwing an original Reaper, and it's about dead. He gets a lot of dead hits with it. Just had it resurfaced and it didn't help very much at all. Instead of going with the hook again, he has decided to get a new ball.

I already talked him out of the throttle-R, because it was voted worst ball, lol. So he has asked me to ask you guys what would work well for him.

for 150 avg person. get a 150 ball and 100 dollars in lessons.

much better than a 240 ball. the better ball may raise his avg a few pins to 10 but lessons will give him a chance to add 40 pins to his avg.

I would look at medium reactive balls or low load particles as a starting point.

Blade solid or sling blade
Tornado series
strom = Hot line

take it from the "Been there, Done that" file. Poor spare shooting has nothing to do with that being a dead ball. the equipment matters, but not as much as execution. forget about the 30 balls I have bought since getting into the reactive/particles era. 120.00 in lessons has done more to raise my avg that anything else. 180 to 200 in five months.

do your friend a favor and pass this bit of wisdom on to him he will enjoy the game more.

I wouldn't say he is a poor spare shooter. He's about average for an amateur player. Like I said A lot of the reason he is a 150 ave. is because the ball has no punch when it hits the pocket. Yes, the pocket, not light, not heavy, and actual pocket shot. Because of his high revs he actually has a better of striking when he hits brooklyn. Thats about the only time he gets any pin action. lol

I have to agree about the lessons. I only have about a 165 average, because I havnt gone to any lessons. I know people that have though, and it really does help you a ton! Im actually in the middle of searching for good places to go for lessons. I live in PA so if anyone has any suggestions please message me

ok fine. He took l;essens now he has a 20000000000 average. Now will someone please tell me a good ball for someone with high revs at 17 mph, who shoots outside, and usually in medium oil?

I'm a firm believer in traditional urethane, however, it may not be his cup of tea.  But if he is game to try it, I would say the slate blue gargoyle or a cranberry pearl urethane groove.  The groove is a pearl yes, but it is a grabby pearl, quite an interesting reaction for a non-reactive urethane.
