Approach Problem
« on: December 25, 2007, 12:17:55 PM »
Hi everyone, I am having difficulties getting to the foul line currently. I'm a stroker with medium revs and speed. I always get to the foul line like 3 feet early. My coaches told me to get closer to the foul line in my starting position, but instead I give smaller steps; from this, my coaches concluded it's a psicological fear.

So, anybody has tips for overcoming this problem? Help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

So you are getting to the foul line before you need to and crossing over it? How many steps are you taking?

I take 5 steps, and the ball lands before the foul line, giving me a very weak ball reaction.

Walk up to the foul line, put ur back to the pins take 4.5 or 5.5  (large steps depending on ur approach) back tword the ball return. thats ur starting position.

If your still to far away from the foul line then your obviously taking to small of steps to get back to the foul line or something. Perhaps try walking up going through your approach, to find the problem.

If your coming up short on the line and dropping it before the line you have pretty much 3 things you can do to possibly fix the problem:

1) take larger steps if it doesn't throw you out of rythem or

2) if you are a shorter guy with shorter legs then step up about 1/2' on the approach or approx. the distance you are short of the foul line.

or

3)loft the ball a little to clear the front part of the lane and not killing the ball reaction.

I wouldn't change the amount of steps you take cause that will really throw you off. I would adjust to what you have now and see if that fixes the problem, then switch if you have to.

If its your head messing with you, try to foul. Stand at you normal place and thinbk "im gonna foul this ball". Dont think about anything else, just push your left foot forward towards the Foul line.
I usually ends up one foot before the foul line, so im also laying my ball down on the approach.
