using your ring and pinkie fingers
« on: December 14, 2005, 08:34:47 AM »
I recently saw a post by sawbones that said to practice using these to fingers to get the feel of staying under the ball.  I've also incorportated this into shooting my ten pin. during practice I'm still able to get a decent amount of revs on the ball and my control is much better using this method.  Is there any reason not to throw the ball like this all the time?  My driller thinks that a 16 lb
ball, holding it correctly is a better way of curbing my "coming around" problem.
But I score better throwing a 15lb ball with the other fingers.  Any thoughts on this?

thanks

If your talking about using your ring and pinky fingers insted of the middle and ring I'd advise never to do that, unless you want permenant palm ligament damage or plan on getting surgery. Take if from me, to make a long story short I really damaged my hand bad. The only thing that ever came good our of this is it forced me to start all over again and learn to throw it with a normal grip. But that took a long time.

I was just asking if there is any room for this method in someones arsenal.  But thanks for the insightful thought.  It actually would have been more funny if you said, "Your mom throws with those fingers." I hope that there are more people on this forum like Brian then Sammy and if not I just won't post anymore, since all I wanted was some insight and not to be mocked.

I wouldn't really call what he said mocking...he's right. You score better with the other fingers, end of discussion. Trust me that flame was nothing compared to the usual around here. He's right fella, you can hurt yourself using the ring and pinky, and if you score better with the other fingers, then why change?

Like I said, I'm really not looking to change but was wondering if it could be used in extremely dry conditions.  As for mocking me, I just wish he could have came up with something better.  I enjoy a good ribbing and laugh, but that showed no thought, it was rather disappointing.

It was far from a flame. I have personal experince in this and perhaps if your strong enough you may get away with it. But that's alot of weight and momentum your placing on the weak side of your hand. I don't know your situation of why you would want to do this anyways unless your having trouble of staying underneth the ball.

If it wasn't a flame then I'm sorry for thinking it was.  I have a real problem with coming around the ball and always have.  I really don't want to do it all the
time, I only used it as a tool to get the feel for staying behind the ball twice in practice.  When I stay behind the ball I easily average 220-230 but always digress back to coming over the ball, normally slowly and unnoticed.  Hence my average is always in the 200-212 range, and coming over the ball really hinders me in some tourney situations.
