Got my Vertex Mold Personal Spinner! & I love it!
« on: June 09, 2006, 03:00:41 PM »
Hey Ballreviews Family,

I was able to purchase a Vertex 1/2 HP spinner from BuddiesProShop since I won a great coupon from the TAT megabucks this past February.

My buddy Jonathan Ng, who is also a member of BR under the same name has one and had many good things to say about it. I have been experimenting for about 2 hours and it has been nothing but fun.

The motor is lukewarm after about 1/2 hour of work, but I took breaks in betwen balls. Have done 5 so far. It has had no signs of quitting.

Thanks to Chris @ BuddiesProShop, Doug @ VertexMold, & Jonathan for the recommendation. Also, more thanks go out to Charlest, Chango, & legend4life95 for helping me out in the Coverstock Preparation forum awhile back.

Off to more Polishing & Resurfacing!
Best Regards,
Ram

On that note I purchased a Donkee 3/4 horse ball spinner about 2 months ago and I absolutely love it. I have resurfaced about 10 balls usuually, 2 or 3 in a row with now problems.  It has been a blast playing around with the covers. One thing to note is that it has 2 speeds which is one of the reasons I went with this model, however it does vibrate on the higher speed, which may be a turn off for some but doesn't really bother me. It hums away on the lower speed.  Normally I don't apply too much pressure but for kicks I tried and it just keeps spinning away. Also it has an optional splash guard which is great, it does a great job of keeping the mess to almost none. This spinner gets 2 thumbs up. Considering how much $$$ we all spend on equipment a ball spinner is well worth a few $$$

I have had the donkee 2 speend 1/2 hp spinner and hated it. The thing was loud, its bulky and vibrated terribly. I sold that spinner on ebay and picked up a vertex mold single speed 1/2 spinner and could not be happier. The extra speed is not needed for normal at home use.

Doug at Vertex is great and the warranty on Vertex spinners is very good. I know they stand behind their product. Donkee on the other hand is being sold (or already has been sold) and I'm not to sure how that will affect the warranty of their spinners.

For anyone looking to buy a spinner, get the Vertex and you will be happy.

You're welcome, for whatever little bit I offered and you could use.
Now, for the payback - you can teach me to bowl ...

I have nothing bad at all to say about the Vertex spinner and their company.  They upgraded my warranty from 2 years to 3 for no reason at all.  Last year I had a problem with the spinner where if you put anything other than very light pressure on the ball, it would stop spinning.  I contacted them by phone about the issue, and they had a UPS driver show up at my house the very next day to pick it up.  I got it back about a week later and it works perfectly.  All of this was free of charge.  They are a top-notch company with great customer service and great products.

My Vertex 1/2HP spinner is about 6 months old. I use it after every bowling session to clean everything I've thrown that day, and I use it to resurface or adjust coverstocks on a semi-regular basis. Mine did exactly as you said last week. Anything over very light hand pressure, and it would slip. I removed the bottom cover thinking maybe the new drive belt from the motor to the bowl had stretched and needed adjusted. Not so. What happened was the bowl was spinning on the shaft to which it is attached. I was able to slide the bowl off the shaft to inspect. I was suprised to find out the bowl was attached to the shaft only with glue. This happened at 10 PM Monday night, so I was in the mood for a quick fix. I used some Crazy Glue to secure it, and it works perfectly again (for now). If it fails again, I will remove the bowl and the shaft, drill through both, and run a dowel pin or a small bolt through them both to allow for a permanent fit. Other than this one minor problem, I am very pleased with the spinner.

Jon-
That is exactly what happened to mine.  The gentleman I talked to on the phone told me that the sealant had come loose and that he would reseal the bowl onto the shaft.  He told me that it is a rare problem.  You're the only other person I know that it's happened to.  He called me back after it was shipped and told me to use only light pressure for a couple days just to be sure the sealant cured.  It has been fine ever since.  I can't imagine that the Crazy Glue will hold for very long.  That's a good idea you have with the dowel.  Good luck!

Don,

It looks like they used a similar glue when they put it together in the first place. It's difficult to tell exactly what they used, but it was certainly a thin glue of some sort. I'll let you know if it fails again, and how difficult it is to re-engineer their design!

Be careful adding a dowel pin, bolt, etc. to a spinning shaft.  You might get it out of balance enough to cause major vibration.  --  JohnP

As long as I drill through the true center, and it protrudes the same amount on each side, then it will not create an imbalance. It will be just like a symmetrical core in a bowling ball. Which leads to my next thought.

So what if it creates an imbalance. When you are properly adjusting the coverstock of a bowling ball on a spinner (by mounting it on all six sides), the ball creates quite a bit more imbalance than a dowel pin that might weigh slightly more than a pubic hair.
